The Scoop on Emma Watson's New "Pixie" Styles

For the International premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 11 in the beginning of July, Emma Watson debuted a longer pixie cut, (well her stylist, Rodney Cutler, is calling it a graduated bob, but that's besides the point), either way I thought looked super sexy!  He gave me the scoop on this 'do's new direction. "The inspiration behind the look was from the Louise Brooks era, but modernized," Cutler said.  "Layers in the interior and feathered bangs in the front to draw an outline of attention to a strong silhouette."

Since short hair can get boring, Cutler made sure to change up Emma's length, texture and color to give her variety. With this style, she can go messy and sexy or sleek and polished, which is exactly what he did for her International and NYC Harry Potter premieres.

For the International premiere in London, Redken Root Lifter, flat ironed pieces and a touch of height made up the sultry, messy look.  However for the NYC premiere, Cutler wanted Emma to make more of a fashion statement and combined a slick low side part, smoothing serum and Cutler Shine Tattoo for a smooth finish.

My New Dye Job: Clairol Focuses Attention on Professional Color

Now that I'm no longer a slave to my Great Length hair extensions (which I was obsessed with, but their time was up), I'm trying a ton of new things with my real hair.  Since I came home from Aruba I've been sporting a sinful look of red-tinged roots that in the winter months grow in mousy brown, but thanks to the sun I was blessed with beyond ugly.  Ew! Therefore, last week I visited the Mizu Salon in NYC to test out Clairol's upgraded professional dyes.  I've been dying my hair to darker shades of brown since the beginning of time mixing between at-home hair dyes and salon visits.  I've tried Clairol's Natural Instincts at-home color kits, but never their in-salon services.

Senior Colorist, Nico Scibelli, used the Clairol Professional Liquicolor Permanente in a dark chocolate brown shade on my roots and applied a gloss to my whole head afterwards.  The result: incredible shine, super soft hair and rich color.

"These dyes work exactly how they did years ago so there are no real surprises to the client," says Scibelli.  "The great thing is that they are vamped up, more conditioning, better for the hair, but don't offer any tonal surprises so Clairol fans know what they're in for."

Instead of wheat being one of the main ingredients in the dye, Clairol is using a soy based complex. So far I'm impressed with the results.  My hair truly looks and feels great.  Check out Mizu Salon in NYC to try Clairol Professional dyes or find a salon near you.

NYC & The Blowout

Every city has their thing.  In New York City, it's all about the blow out.  Good hair is our best accessory.  I have to admit, I may write the how-tos (thanks to stylist interviews) and test out all of the latest hair products but when it comes to blowing out my own hair, it's a big fail.  I do it, but it never looks quite as good as when I get it professionally done. That's where Marianna comes in.  Years ago she trained under Fekkai and traveled the world working as a stylist, but I found her at Besu Salon in Gramercy Park (the same place I get my brows threaded).  She sets each section of hair after its dried in rollers, takes them out and I swear I experience a miracle every single time.  The best part – her blow outs are under $60.

Sneak Peek: Behind the Scenes Ali Ro Shoot

This week I participated in a ten hour shoot with personal style bloggers, Keiko of Keikolynn, Christine of Mystylepill and Christina of Troprouge for Ali Ro's new e-commerce website debuting this fall. We had a great time styling eight outfits each and shooting all around the Meatpacking District.  Four of the shots were group shots, which I found the most fun and comfortable and the other four were solos.  Every time I do solo shots for my Glamour column I feel like I'm the cheesiest poser!

Since the shoot was for Ali Ro's new e-commerce site that's launching in August, we'll be featured from August through December in all different looks.  It was a really fun day and I can't wait to share the new site with you!

(Side note: picture me in 5 1/2 heels almost falling on the cobble stone as we walked to shoot locations. Yes, I looked like the girl who couldn't walk in heels.)

*Next week on my Glamour column I'm putting up a ton more behind the scenes shots so stay tuned!

Survival of the Sexiest: Tom Ford Launches New Line

Tom Ford exudes sexy.  Not only is the man himself lust-worthy, but his luxorious clothing line, richly pigmented lipsticks, and steamy ads are a dangerous trifecta.

Now, Ford is launching a brand new makeup collection to complete the one-off Private Blend Lip Color he launched last year, which retailed at $45 a pop.  Yes, for one tube.  Mr. Sexy is also launching a full skincare collection at the same time.

“My brain works in the same way whatever I do," Ford said in Womens Wear Daily. "The approach is practical, architectural, and I use the same vocabulary whether I’m designing clothing or color cosmetics.”

What ever your doing Tom, it's working, and like all women in America – I'm turned on.

Spontaneity Leads to the Unexpected, Bring It On!

It's amazing what you'll discover about yourself when you step out of your comfort zone.  Me – a super detailed, anally organized, to-the-minute type of girl who structures her freelance lifestyle to the T so she doesn't end up tumbling like a rolling stone.  The new me – still a super detailed, anally organized, structured girl who isn't afraid to be spontaneous. This past weekend I went on a press trip to Miami with Schick and the theme of the weekend was "Dare to be Spontaneous."  My "detailed" itinerary for the three day trip left out all activities and times of obligation and only included our flights, hotel and car service information.  I took on the challenge of this go-with-the-flow lifestyle, and packed a few rompers and bikinis. My favorite beauty girls and I didn't know what we were in for and all felt a little uneasy not knowing when we could fit in nap or gym time.  The next thing I knew, I drove a jet ski (never in my life did I ever trust my self to DRIVE anything before, let alone in the ocean), had a massage, a few cocktails and are you ready for this... not only did we sit in a VIP box at a Katy Perry concert, but we had a meet and greet with her too!  The craziest part, Russell Brand decided to interrupt it!

I had to ask Katy Perry about her guiltiest pleasure and her answer – cats!  "I used to think cats were c*nts, but after learning about them I like how you have to gain their respect.  I love having my cat lick my face."

My Photo Shoot with Silhouette

Yesterday I had the honor to to act as a model and partake in a photo shoot with Silhouette, a brand dedicated to creating rimless eyewear, for their look book.  I was so excited, but at the same time super nervous, because  as you know, I'm no model! Even though I do TV segments and feel comfortable in front of that camera, being in front of a camera like this is completely different.  The photographer, Andreas Hofer, was a saint.  He coached me through the 2 1/2 hour shoot and made me feel really confident.  We shot on top of a roof deck downtown that over looked NYC. The biggest challenges – not smiling, the wind and trying to ignore all of the people who were watching!

I wrote a more in depth piece on this that will be posted next week on my column on Glamour.com with tons of behind the scenes pics.  Make sure you check it out!

The Latest Brand to Make Me Blush

Follow my blog with Bloglovin Everyday I receive anywhere from five to ten packages of beauty products from different companies to try and test so I can tell you about the latest and greatest.  Well, this day was no different, but when I was checking out the new Buxom Lip Tarnishes from Bare Escentuals I was literally blushing.

Wearing their new red shade (Busted) on my upper lip and testing the bubble gum pink (Wardrobe Malfunction) on my lower, I was surprised by the seductive verbiage in the marketing materials.  Obviously these are things I would expect from Victoria's Secret Beauty or Flirt! Cosmetics, but not Bare Escentuals.  The other two colors are called Black Mail and Caught on Tape and the concept behind these new moisturizing and plumping lip stains is to "Get everyone talking because there are so many ways to tarnish your reputation, but so little time."  Dirty.  Almost.

After that caught my attention I noticed a cooling effect on my lips that didn't go away after application like I expected and I liked it.  The formula is made with Vitamin E, and indeed very moisturizing, long lasting and intense.  If you're a lip color girl, I'd give these a go.

*Available in August.

Undateable: The Grooming Edition

There are so many things that make a man undatable.  I'm sure you can create an indepth list, but take it from me, a girl who finally found love after being single in NYC for years.  Ladies let me tell you, it all begins with grooming. Here's my list of what makes a guy undateable from head to toe and yes, everywhere in between if you know what I mean. If the subject has a uni-brow or brows waxed to perfection he is undateable. There is no excuse for a uni-brow. If there was a woman in his life at some point, she would have helped him take care of this situation. So chances are, he looks stupid and has no clue about dating to begin with. Or maybe he actually likes it. Don't barbers normally do something about those? And Guido brows... don't get me started.  They're a strict no, no. This normally signifies that he'll always be more prim and proper than you are in every way. Undateable.

If the subject has dirty fingernails he is undateable. Dirt underneath the nails, bitten cuticles and uneven (ouch) bitten nails equals unsanitary conditions. I'm not saying all men should be lining up for weekly manicures, but the way they take care of their hands often signifies how they like to represent themselves.  And he wants to touch you?  Forget about it.

If the subject takes longer than you to get ready he is undateable. Ladies, do you really want to sit around and wait to go out while Romeo primps? Ew, no. Undateable. Shit, shower and shave.  After all, he is a man.

If the subject doesn't understand how to maintain the land down under he is undateable. You know what I'm talking about. Trim? Shave? They need to do what they have to do, but neatness is necessary. This is 2011 and you know you're keeping it up so why shouldn't he?  No one wants to get lost in the forest while trying to find the goods.

If the subject wears a "wool sweater" year long (or ever) he is undateable. Yes, they're out there... men with hairy chests, shoulders and backs. Their body surrenders to the hair and they accept it! Not OK. There is no excuse for anyone to be that hairy or close to it. Men, I'm not saying to go wax your body, but severe maintenance is necessary. Do you really think a girl wants to run her hand on your chest and get tangles in your nappy hair?

If the subject's toe nails scratch you between the sheets he is undateable. It's as simple as a toe nail clipper. Please.

So ladies, watch out for these types of men. For some you may be able to tell if they're undateable right away. Others may surprise you as you get more intimate, but hey, it's all part of the dating game.  Right?

What other grooming habits make men undateable?

Take A Trip to Tahiti in Your Very Own Shower

I've always dreamt of staying in a private hut out on the water in Tahiti.  It seems like a lover's paradise!  Even though I don't think I'll be venturing there any time soon, I escape there in my head each time I use my Carol's Daughter Monoi Repairing Hair Mask, $29.  No exaggeration. It's made with Monoi Oil, which is made from soaking the petals of a Tahitian flower, the Tiare, in a coconut oil.  You can only imagine what it smells like. Therefore, I've been using it more often than necessary (about three times a week) when I really only need to use it weekly because it's super nourishing.  I highly recommend you try it next time you're in the market for a conditioning hair mask.

My True Beauty Secrets Campaign for Elizabeth Arden

A few months ago I filmed a campaign with BetterTV and Elizabeth Arden called True Beauty Secrets with Rachel Hayes Gayle of DailyMakeover.com and Daneen Baird of SpoiledPretty.com and it just went live. The video centers around Elizabeth Arden's Gold Ultra Restorative Ceramide Capsules, $68, which I used for a month prior to shooting.  They're tiny little individually packaged capsules with enough serum for your face, neck and decollete.  I like them for two reasons – 1. besides their anti-aging benefits, they also act as a great makeup primer filling in fine lines and 2. they're travel friendly.

Check out the video!

Haute Hue: Red, Yay or Nay?

First Scarlett Johansson then Blake Lively... it seems our favorite blondes are trading in their signature locks for strawberry-hinted reddish hues. Blake's excuse?  She wanted to feel like the character she was playing for her new role in the movie Hick.  Makes sense to me and even though I like her better as a blonde I think she nicely pulls off this color too.

I remember when Scarlett dyed her hair red for her role in Iron Man 2 back in 2009.  I liked it then, but it was also a deeper red and her hair was longer so it was an overall sexier look.  Now, I think her short hair looks better as a blonde.

Kate Middleton's Royal Wedding Hair & Makeup Details

Of course I have to comment on how beautiful Kate Middleton looked today as she turned into a princess. The royal wedding hype brought on a ton of beauty predictions for the past nine months, but  I wasn't surprised to see that Kate didn't stray too far from her normal look. I think all brides should look like themselves on their wedding day and Kate did just that but stepped everything up just a bit.  Makeup artist, Arabella Preston, taught her to do her own makeup in three or four classes and Kate did her makeup herself!  She went a little more drastic with her eye makeup, but Kate stuck with her basics and accentuated all of her features.

I love that her stylist, Richard Ward, gave her a half up 'do with soft curls to show off her face and earrings, and OMG that Cartier tiara – no words.  That was her something borrowed from the Queen.  Must be nice!

What do you think of Kate's look?

Coveted Green Juice Recipe

Last week I interviewed celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder and she mentioned her glowing green smoothie, which many of you have been asking about. Even though I've been opting to purchase green juice from my local deli (as of late my go-to has been Bolthouse Farms Green Goodness), I sought out the recipe for the magic smoothie that Kim's celeb clients rave about.  Now all I have to do is whip out my blender.

The Bolthouse Farms drink has most of the same ingredients in it, and is more convenient for me since I'm always on the go, but I'm definitely going to try to make this coveted recipe on the weekend.

Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups water 1 head organic romaine lettuce, chopped 3-4 stalks organic celery 1/2 head of a large bunch or 3/4 of a small bunch of spinach 1 organic apple, cored and chopped 1 organic pear, cored and chopped 1 organic banana Juice of 1/2 fresh organic lemon

optional: 1/3 bunch organic cilantro (stems okay) 1/3 bunch organic parsley (stems okay)

Directions: Add the water and chopped head of romaine to the blender. Starting the blender at low speed, mix until smoothi. Gradually moving to higher speeds, add the celery, apple and pear. Add the cilantro and parsley, if you are choosing to add them. Add the banana and lemon juice last.

My Sweet Ride with Mercedes Benz

Today I was honored to partner with Mercedes Benz to take part in their Fashion Force campaign and ride around NYC for two hours in their branded 2010 CLS63 AMG Fashion Force car in search of fashionable New Yorkers who really stood out like the car (and trust me, it stood out).

The car resembled a decked out cop car and even had lights on top with words "Mercedes Benz Fashion Force" written along the side.  It was quite a show.  First, since it was 10am I head up to the Upper East Side thinking I should find some fashion savvy girls running around in front of Intermix and all of the stores near 79th Street. We parked the car and I found three people. One merchandiser for Intermix who lives in NYC, a fashion designer from Brazil and an producer from LA.  All three women were in industries that required them to have a unique sense of fashion so it didn't surprise me that I was automatically drawn to them.

Next, we cruised down to Union Square and here, I met some characters.  People flocked to the car for photos, but I was picky looking for that unique sense of fashion similar to the one of the Mercedes I was riding in.  As you can see from the pics below, I found some fashionistas including a design student from Parsons, blogger (my friend) of AGlamSlam.com and super hot model who, his unique look speaks for itself!

The Truth About Skin Cancer Today

As we welcome Spring I know how tempting it is to get good color, lay out on a nice day and yes, even pay a visit to a tanning salon before a vacation or big event.   Therefore, I feel it's my responsibility, as a former tanorexic and beauty writer, to report the facts on skincancer that I can only hope you pay attention to. First off, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US and in most cases, it can easily be avoided, yet over 3.5 million cases are diagnosed yearly.  Have you ever blistered from a sunburn?  I know I have.  If you're like me, you have more than two times the chance of developing melanoma in your lifetime.  Do I have your attention now?

Well, believe it or not over 30 million Americans are still using tanning beds.  Imagine the protection they're supplying themselves when they're in the sun?  I had those days.  I was bad to my skin and I can only hope that I'll be OK.  As I head off to Punta Cana and St. Thomas within the next few weeks I'll be loading up on my SPF.  My pick – MD Solar Science.  The line has a wide range of SPF's along with a broad spectrum of UVA and UVB protection and was developed by physicians.

Health Tip: Don't Rely on Your BMI

When paying attention to your health and fitness everyone has their own formula for what works for them.  For me, I stay away from numbers.  I don't pay attention to the scale or count calories. For me, feeling fit, working out, eating healthy and liking how my clothes fit me works.  In case you're into BMI, check this out... The number calculated from your weight and height to create your body mass index, or BMI, is used by doctors to determine if you’re at a healthy weight.  However, even though the number is accurate, exactly what it measures is up for debate.

The problem with using BMI as a measuring tool to see if you’re overweight, normal or underweight is that it doesn’t distinguish between fatty and lean tissue.  Therefore, it’s misleading and can cause doctors to misdiagnose a condition such as an eating disorder or obesity.

“The B.M.I. tables are excellent for identifying obesity and body fat in large populations, but they are far less reliable for determining fatness in individuals,” explained Dr. Carl Lavie, a cardiologist at the Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute in New Orleans to The New York Times.

To calculate your BMI, simply divide your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters.  Example: Weight = 68 kg, Height = 165 cm (1.65 m)  Calculation:68 ÷ (1.65)2 = 24.98

If you fall below an 18.5 you’re said to be underweight, from 18.5 to 24.9 is normal, 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight and a BMI of 30 and above indicates obesity. When calculating your BMI keep in mind that it isn’t a perfect measurement.

Enhance Your Pout & Get Tipsy

According to Bite Beauty, women apply lipstick on an average of five times a day.  Well, if you apply Bite's lipsticks five times per day you may end up wasted.  Just kidding... but if you like red wine as much as I do, this one's for you.
Each of Bite Beauty's new lipsticks contain as much resveratrol as five glasses of red wine.  So no, it won't get you drunk, but it will give your pout a boost of antioxidants.  Because of its benefits, resveratrol is an ingredient that has been used in skincare for the past few years.
The collection includes Luminous Creme Lipstick, High Pigment Pencils, Lip Shine (a gloss), Lip Rouge (my fave), SPF 15 Sheer Lip Balm, a vitamin lip gel and a nourishing super fruit butter.  They range from $18 - $24 and can be found at Sephora.
