Self Magazine Features My Beauty Look in Their September Issue and It's So Easy You Can Do It, Too

In the beginning of the summer when the beauty editors of Self mag asked me if I'd be interested in being featured in their September I told them they were crazy for even asking! Honored, I jumped at the opportunity and a few weeks later a bag arrived at my apartment with how-to instructions for four different makeup looks along with four jumbo zip lock bags filled with cosmetics for each. While I'm no makeup artist, these looks were really easy to accomplish.  My favorite were the smokey eye and pink lip.  I shot some of the looks in my backyard in Jersey and some on my vacation in Aruba.  Lighting is everything!  The photo they chose was the smokey eye look, which was shot in Aruba on my family vacation by my uncle, Rich Millward, who is a photographer (lucky me!).  I instagramed all of the pics that I sent in to make sure my skin looked flawless (wouldn't you?).

Pick up the September issue of Self to check out the "Less Is More, Beautiful" article about easy fall makeup looks.  Other beauty bloggers from DailyMakeover.com and the blogger behind BeautyBanter.com are featured as well.  I'm telling you, all of the looks are super easy!

Guilty Pleasures of the Web

I must admit that I probably spend 18 out of 24 hours of my day online.  Call me a geek, but it's my life!  Here's a peek at what I've been entertained by this week in between writing breaks.  Enjoy!

My True Beauty Secrets Campaign for Elizabeth Arden

A few months ago I filmed a campaign with BetterTV and Elizabeth Arden called True Beauty Secrets with Rachel Hayes Gayle of DailyMakeover.com and Daneen Baird of SpoiledPretty.com and it just went live. The video centers around Elizabeth Arden's Gold Ultra Restorative Ceramide Capsules, $68, which I used for a month prior to shooting.  They're tiny little individually packaged capsules with enough serum for your face, neck and decollete.  I like them for two reasons – 1. besides their anti-aging benefits, they also act as a great makeup primer filling in fine lines and 2. they're travel friendly.

The Right Brows for Your Face Shape

I'm pretty anal when it comes to having my eyebrows threaded.  I get them done when there's the least bit of hair underneath them because they need to look and feel very clean.  I also love the woman who shapes my brows because she places the arch exactly where it needs to be. What about you?  Are your brows shaped properly according to your face shape?  There is a science to the madness!  DailyMakeover recently talked with the owner of Browhaus Salon, Cynthia Chua, to find out just how to get the perfect brow for your face shape.  Check out the article to make sure you're in check.

Have you ever experienced a brow horror story?

Foods That Can Help You Lose Weight

Last week I was venturing to one of my fave cafe's in NYC, One Lucky Duck, to grab a salad with a friend and he was telling me he once tried an apple cleanse – a three day cleanse where you only eat apples.  Sounds crazy right?  Well, if you're anything like me and aren't attracted to the idea of eating apples for three days straight, check out these foods that Dr. Perricone told DailyMakeover.com can help you lose weight. Apples Despite their relatively high sugar levels, apples actually exert a stabilizing effect on blood sugar, thanks in part to their high fiber content, but also because they contain phloretin: a blood-sugar-stabilizing phytonutrient found exclusively in apples.

Salmon Wild Alaskan salmon leads the pack in helping us to shed weight and keep it off. It's rich with flavorful, healthful omega-3 fats, which makes it a top weight-control food. Sardines and anchovies are also great sources of omega 3's.

Beans and Lentils Legumes--dried beans, lentils and company--prompt burning of body fat, stabilize blood sugar and have more protein than other plant foods. They also burn body fat and provide energy and protein! A meal with legumes raises blood sugar slowly and moderately, making you feel fuller for longer.

Yogurt Calcium is important in weight loss, especially dairy foods with probiotics, such as yogurt. In a recent clinical study, participants who ate yogurt lost about 10 pounds of fat and an inch and a half off of their waists, compared to six pounds and a quarter of an inch lost by those who just took calcium supplements. Sixty percent of the yogurt eaters' weight loss was lost abdominal fat, the hardest to lose. Finally, yogurt was about twice as effective at preserving muscle, the only kind of tissue that burns calories while your body is at rest.

Look Hot This Season By Pumping Up Your Pony Tail

Not that you don't already know, but I'm sure we can all use a little extra help when it comes to looking sassy this holiday season.  I found a great article on DailyMakeover that dissected 20 different ways! From rocking the right accessories to how to wear a berry lip, they covered all of the sexiest looks of the season.  My fave: Pump Up Your Pony Tail AnnaLynne McCord style.  Here's how to get the look: Blow-dry hair, then twirl large Velcro rollers around two-inch sections of hair, blast with heat for five minutes, then remove and lightly brush hair. Tease roots and pull back into a haute ponytail.

Have A Jersey Shore Halloween

Do you know what you're being for Halloween yet?  I have to admit I'm staying far out of NYC during the parade thanks to the amount of Snooki's and Paulie D's that I fear will be running around this year.  This year, I'm sticking to watching trick or treaters in, ironic enough, Jersey. If you want to embrace your inner Jersey Shore or try it on for just a minute by all means, be my guest!  DailyMakeover put together a Jersey themed makeover studio where you can try on the best of the Jersey characters from all of the shows.

Snooki

There's a Snooki-themed costume on the market, but it's much more fun to recreate her signature pouf on your own. To really cement the look, wear bedazzled sunglasses and carry a jar of pickles all night. Not into Snooks? Here are four more Jersey-themed Halloween looks to try on.

Theresa of The Real Housewives of New Jersey

Our preferred housewife to dress up as is Teresa Giudice because of her ridiculous hairstyles and clothes, but that does not give you an excuse to flip tables all night. You can, however, get one of your friends to dress like Danielle Staub so you two can cause fake drama all night.

Lydia Hearst of Boardwalk Empire

Looking for a period costume? Look no further than HBO's new hit show about Atlantic City during Prohibition in the roaring '20s. Dress like a flapper and do your hair in a classic '20s hairstyle. Either create a faux (or real!) bob for the night, or wear a headband around the crown of your head in the hairstyle du jour.

A Jerseylicious stylist

In this Style Network show, Jersey girls attempt to fit both their hair and their attitudes under the roof of the hair salon where they all work. Remember that frosted eye shadow palette you bought but never used? It's time to dig it out.

The Best of NYFW: That's A Wrap!

Well NYFW has certainly come to an end, and so has my coverage.  Til' next season, allow me to leave you with some of the top beauty looks that all transulate from runway to real way.  The best part about these looks – you can try them all on in DailyMakeover's studio! Models at Vivenne Tam got a lived-in, slightly grungy style thanks to Cutler lead stylist Bok-Hee, who layered mousse on the ends of models' hair, then blew it dry and created "inconsistent waves" with a curling iron. Lots of kohl liner and textured foundation finished the look.

MAC lead makeup artist Val Garland at Cynthia Rowley was going for an innocent look, so she put the focus on the eyes with 20 coats of mascara on the bottom lashes to give models that ingenue appeal. A smudged red lip provided color, while metallic hair extensions were added to a sleek updo for a punk edge.

The hair and makeup at Charlotte Ronson was sweet meets street. Tresemme lead stylist Jeanie Syfu added subtle texture and a bit of curl to models' hair, then created tiny braids on each side. Instead of tying them off with elastics, she applied Tresemme Curl Activator to the ends of the braids and then clamped with a flat iron to secure.

While a few of the looks at Fashion Week were over-the-top and extravagant, the majority were much more low-key and wearable, like this effortlessly sexy one worn by models at Alexander Berardi. A volumized, side-swept low ponytail and naturally defined eye makeup created a casually chic air that was more real life than runway.

Six Habits for Healthier Skin

There are so many factors that go into having good skin.  Yes, using your sunscreen and moisturizing daily definitely helps, but there other behavioral elements that affect your skin too.  Board-certified in both dermatology and psychiatry, Dr. Wechsler treats the effects that state of mind and physical behaviors have on the skin.  Here are her top six tips as give to DailyMakeover. Practice deep breathing Breathing goes far beyond just delivering life-sustaining oxygen to the body. When you're focusing on your breathing, you're not thinking about anything else. That shift in your mind helps remove stressors, bringing you to a deeper level of consciousness. It can help you halt a stress reaction, or at least control it.

Get active If there is one magic bullet for enhancing the quality of your looks, and your life in general, it's exercise. The science is well documented: exercise fights the onset of age-related disease, lifts your spirits, boosts circulation, lowers inflammation and is the ultimate stress reducer. That healthy glow you get after a great workout (rosy cheeks are indicative of the increased circulation that is nourishing all of those facial cells and tissues) isn't just for show.

Control those cravings When stress hits, cortisol tells our brains that we are hungry, so we seek out sugary, fatty foods, which don't do much for us but contribute to extra pounds and worse moods. Break the cycle using two of my key strategies. One, eat lots of lean protein--this will give you more energy and fight hunger pangs, which can play games with your mood. Two, write down the top five guilty treats you tend to reach for when you're stressed. Then, when you do succumb, eat only half of what you normally would.

Focus on the good things Find a notebook or journal you particularly like. Every night, write down three things that went well that day and why. It also may help to keep a gratitude list--things for which you are truly grateful. The point is to focus on the events, people and experiences that you appreciate and that bring you joy. The exercise may even inspire you to turn a negative into a positive just by reshaping your attitude.

Stretch out your sleep Sleep is free cosmetic medicine. Nothing exacerbates stress and a haggard appearance like exhaustion. As you may be able to attest from experience, sleep deprivation can make you cranky, depressed and negative. It can make you overeat, over caffeinate and ditch workouts because you're too tired.

Take a time out For most of us, life is so hyperscheduled that we never do absolutely nothing. It's rare to set aside time just to be--no agenda, no demands, no plans. Find a comfortable, quiet spot to sit for ten to fifteen minutes every day and simply, by yourself, be still. Slowing down in this way, if you do it every day, helps give your brain, your psyche and your whole being a break.

Latest Trend: Chopping It All Off

A-lister's like Renee Zellweger, Hayden Panettiere, and Halle Berry have all gone under the knife recently for the same procedure: a cropped 'do. I think it takes a certain face structure to pull off this fierce look and Halle Berry has it.  Hayden on the other hand, I'm sorry but why?  DailyMakeover.com polled 50 guys in NYC to find out if they prefer short or long hair on a woman.  Not surprisingly, 62% of them were more attracted to women with long hair.

"Long hair is a track record of your health," remarks Jena Pincott, author of Do Gentlemen Really Prefer Blondes? It takes years to grow long hair and if it's maintained and shiny it says a lot about you as a person.

What do you think about these A-Lister's short crops?  Who's do you like and who should get extensions asap?
