Katie Holmes Turns It Up at the Golden Globes

KatiDraped in an eggplant Marchesa gown, Katie Holmes looked stunning on last night's Golden Globes red carpet.  Her dramatic deep side parted pony paired with intensely lined eyes stood out from all of the other hair and makeup.  Overall, she was a picture of perfection.  Agree? Her makeup artist, Genevieve Herr, and hair stylist, DJ Quinterno, filled me in on how to get her look along with the exact products they used to create it.

Skin

“The most important step to looking amazing on the red carpet is to take care of your skin, and Katie has great skin,” said Genevieve. “Makeup artists cannot work wonders without a great foundation.”  That being said, Genevieve prepped Katie's skin with Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Serum and Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream.

Eyes

Because it's soft and smudges easily, Genevieve always uses kohl pencil.  On Katie, she used Laura Mercier in Black Violet.  Then, using the Lancome Violet Sweetheart set, she applied a dark amethyst color on the lids, and blended in a smokey black eye shadow.

Pony

With the words, "clean" and "modern" in mind, DJ started her dramatic side ponytail by applying Alterna Haircare Bamboo Smooth Pure Kendi Treatment Oil and letting it soak for 10 minutes before shampooing.  Then, on damp hair, DJ mixed a small amount of the Alterna Haircare Caviar Seasilk Oil Gel with the Alterna Haircare Caviar Anti-Aging Omega (+) Nourishing Oil and brushed it through with a Mason Pearson brush.

After side parting and blowdrying with a round brush, DJ used a thin Sedu Revolution Diamond flatiron, from root to tip, to create a super smooth look.  Securing her hair at the nape of her neck with a bungee, he also wrapped several small pieces of hair around the bungee to hide it, and secured those strands with bobby pins.  DJ finished by spraying a supple amount of finishing spray to the top of Katie’s head, and applied a dime-size amount of Alterna Haircare Bamboo Smooth Kendi Dry Oil Micromist to her ends.

Naomi Watts Channels Michelle Williams at the Globes

GoldenGlobesBeauty

Naomi Watts looked stunning on tonight's Golden Globes red carpet, but was her look all too familiar?  Maybe, say, Michelle Willams at the Oscars circa 2006?  Well, you know what they say, imitation is the finest form of flattery and this would be the look to recreate.  A yellow dress paired with red lips (Naomi's wearing L'Oreal Infallible Pro-Last Lipcolor in Red Infallible 211) – bold and beautiful.  Who do you think wore it better?

George Kotsiopoulos of E! Fashion Police & I Chat About Golden Globes Hits & Misses

Monday afternoon I scheduled a call to chat with the one and only George Kotsiopoulos from E! Fashion Police to pick his brain about beauty and fashion hits and misses from the Golden Globes and thanks to Suave, was able to film it!  I adore George and think he's the only one on the show that really knows fashion so I highly respect and value his opinions.  Check out the video and see what we agree and disagree on!

The Real Secret Behind the Stars' Flawless Complexions During Awards Season

My inbox is currently full of awards season pitches and as I was weeding through all of the Golden Globes "Get the Look" emails, I came across a scoop that I simply couldn't ignore.  A publicist from OleHenriksen in LA tipped me off on spa treatments certain celebs were booked for throughout the season.  Golden!  Just last week Mark Wahlberg, Daniel Craig and Katy Perry had appointments and A-listers Charlize Theron, Emma Roberts, Halle Berry, Hilary Swank, Jessica Alba, Kate Beckinsale and Renee Zellweger are all due in for face and body treatments.  Here's the scoop on what they're after and how you can mimic the treatments at home: POWER PEEL - MICRODERMABRASION TREATMENT

5 Golden Globes Hairstyles to Steal

This summer I have eight weddings to attend.  Eight!  I'm sure you have your fair share of formal events too, or if you don't, you'll find excuses to cop these styles.  I rounded up my favorite hairstyles from the Golden Globes from top knots to sexy loose waves and everything in between for your viewing pleasure.

A sex kitten blowout with volume.

A glamourous ponytail with face framing pieces.

A texturized top knot.

Old hollywood inspired side swept waves.

Sleek with fringe.

Awards Season Beauty Predictions by Celeb Glam Squads

It's no secret that red carpet season is my favorite season and it kicks off this Sunday with the Golden Globes hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler!  Are you ready?  I'll be speaking to the actors and actresses hair stylists, makeup artists and manicurists as soon as they send their talent off to the red carpet, but for now, L'Oreal's dream team gave me the 411 on their beauty predictions. Makeup

“The red carpet is no place for natural – it’s a place to make a statement. I expect to see a return to full, unapologetic glamour. I predict lots of rich black liquid eyeliner and classic matte red mouths. Think Sophia Loren," states Billy B., L'Oreal Paris Consulting Makeup Artist.

Hair

“I predict this season we’ll see throwbacks to classic Hollywood with polished waves that move. We can also expect to see looks that are more architectural, such as bold, blunt fringe and hair that’s super sleek.  As for updos, I think we’ll be seeing an element of texture incorporated into styles – like braids and twist for a bit of visual interest," explains Johnny Lavoy.

Nails

“Nail art is huge right now and texture/dimension is going to be everywhere in 2013 – including the red carpet. As for the shades I predict we’ll see a lot of, red (from burnt winter red to deep, rich bordeaux) is always a red carpet favorite – it’s classic but timeless. Plan on also seeing bright trend tones on the young and fashion-forward ladies who want to show a bit of personality," remarks Tom Bachik.

Lea Michele's All Natural Golden Globes Beauty Loot

Even though I'm kind of over writing about the Golden Globes I had to share this!  Lea Michele's manicurist, Jenna Hipp took pics of some of the products being used to prepare her for the red carpet.  I think any real behind the scenes pics are awesome and I didn't know that Lea was a huge fan of all natural products.

3 Hot Red Carpet Hair Break Downs

You already know that Nicole Richie's hair was my fave.  How chic was that pony? Redic! But I have to share three more styles created by Stylist, Chris McMillian for Wella that can't go unnoticed.  Here are the step-by-step how to's and my friend's at DailyMakeover are giving away a ton of Wella products that will help you recreate the looks so check out their site.

To Get The Look: First, apply Wella Professionals Natural Volume Styling Mousse to wet hair, then use your hands to shape your hair while it air dries. Once dry, lift up your roots and blow dry upward to create extra lift at the crown. Then, apply Wella Professionals Mirror Polish for a glossy finish and to help smooth hair into shape. Add a simple black headband with a jeweled brooch to give this retro look a modern spin. Push bangs to the side where the jewel is positioned for a heavy fringe effect.

To Get The Look: The trick to creating a soft, flattering updo to is to first create a lot of volume. Butler used Wella Professionals Extra Volume Mousse on damp hair, then blow dryed it. Next, curl hair with a large barrel curling iron for extra volume, then pull hair back into a high pony and wrap it into a tight knot. (Danes' look was only secured with TWO hair pins!) Lastly, comb back hair with fingers, coated with Wella Professionals Mirror Polish Shine Serumfor a soft sheen. Spritz with Wella Professionals Stay Essential hairspray for a hold that will last all night.

To Get The Look: Rough dry hair to manipulate and emphasize natural texture. Then, mist hair with Wella Professionals Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray to protect it from thermal heat while also adding texture. Use a 1-inch flat iron on hair to create soft S formations and add a natural wave texture. Finish with a mist of Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray.

Get Nicole Richie's Golden Globes Hair in 5 Simple Steps

As I mentioned in a previous post, Nicole Richie was one of my absolute favorite looks of the night.  I always love her style and no matter what way she wears them, she has the best bangs!  I still bring a photo of her side bangs to my stylist every time I get them trimmed.  I spoke with her Golden Globes stylist, Jenny Cho for Suave on how to get her red carpet 'do. 1. Start with clean, dry hair and spritz dry shampoo like Suave Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo directly into the roots on the crown of your head and in the front.  Refresh your blowout with your hairdryer and a round brush working the dry shampoo into the hair to create texture.

2. Section off the hair around the crown of your head and tease it to create volume and clip it aside.

3. Use a half boar bristle, half nylon brush to smooth out your hair on the sides and back of your head pulling it back and securing it into a ponytail.

4. Take a side section and wrap it around the ponytail, securing with a bobby pin. Take the opposite side and do the same to cover the elastic.

5. Finally, take the teased crown section that you set aside and lightly smooth it back with a brush over the ponytail.  Secure with bobby pins.

Golden Globes Beauty: Zooey Deschanel's Tuxedo Mani, Hit or Miss?

Zooey Deschanel hit the Golden Globes red carpet in a green and black silk Prada gown that was very, well, very Zooey, but what really caught my attention was her tuxedo mani. While it is expected for men to wear tuxedos to awards ceremonies, I have to admit, I didn't really like the look on Zooey's nails.  Even though nail art was a huge trend backstage during fashion week for Spring 2012, I think it should be kept off of the red carpet.

Her dress on the other hand, I loved.  I thought it was elegant and expressed her personality. What do you think of nail art on the red carpet?

Top 5 Looks of the Golden Globes

The Golden Globes red carpet had me blown away tonight!  I couldn't decide on my absolute favorite look.  I think it's a tie between Charlize Theron's sexy deep-V Dior gown paired with a glamorous headband and Jessica Alba's super feminine strapless Gucci, but I saw so many chic styles that I had to show you my top five. 2012 Golden Globes A-List Hair Predictions

While I may not be dishing about who's predicted to win which award on Sunday night at the Golden Globes, I can tell you that beauty predictions by top stylists and makeup artists have been rolling in and those, well, I just have to share.  My friend's at DailyMakeover spoke with Wella Professionals Celebrity Hairstylist Andy LeCompte and Wella Professionals Color Ambassador Aura Friedman to get their insights.  Their top two hair predictions – Effortless yet glossy and daring tones mixed with definition.  Check them out. Effortless Elegance With A Glossy Finish "I think we'll see a peak in fluid textures that suggest effortless elegance, like very healthy and sleek hair that shows a lot of movement. This style will be popular with soft and light tones with a warm glow that emphasizes healthy, shiny hair representative of the Wella Trend Vision look aptly named, Grace," says LeCompte. Another great example: Charlize Theron's shiny, sleek blowout with gentle waves.

To get the look, first, apply a good amount of hair primer, like Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier, to wet hair. This will create an even surface on each hair follicle, improving the evenness of your overall end look. Then, while your hair is still wet, apply a smoothing balm, such as Wella Professionals Flowing Form, to dramatically enhance the manageability and smoothness of your blowout. One you've finished blow drying your hair, finish with a spritz of shine spray.Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight helps keep hair healthy and shimmering, despite the heat of a blowout.

Statement-Making Tones And Daring Definition To the contrary, we can also expect to see daring, modern styles made possible by the evolution of high tech hair tools and high pigment color. Wella Professionals Color Ambassador Aura Friedman says, "We can look forward to the soft introduction of this very bold hair color trend at the Golden Globes this year. Inspired by the Trend Vision look, "Roxy," this is an attention grabbing style where color plays an integral role. We will especially see a shift to cool red tones and bursts of violet, statement-making colors with an edge of sophistication."

"A perfect color," says Aura, "should complement the person who's wearing it...but also suit their personality and lifestyle. It should enhance, but not overpower." To keep vibrant hues looking their best, Aura suggests to avoid shampooing too much and use a color-safe shampoo and conditioner, like Wella's Brilliance Line. If your hair is very dull, she also recommends getting a clear gloss to add instant vibrancy and seal the cuticle of your hair for added shine. As for the style, this look does not shy away from shape or definition. Tight curls and gravity-defying shapes can be expected. With such "atypical" styles being created with styling tools, it's very important to prepare your hair with a heat protectant spray before styling, such as Wella Professionals Thermal Image Heat Protectant Spray. You'll need to finish the look with a strong-hold hairspray, such as Wella Professionals Stay Firm Finishing Spray.

Monday's Muse

This Monday's Muse is Kathy Griffin.

Nominated for a Grammy for a second year in a row, the comedian looked fab on the red carpet last night. Obviously some credit is owed to all of her plastic surgery, a nose job and a ton of lipo, but she spilled some of her other secrets to E! personality Guliana Rancic.

"It's frustration and starvation," Griffin blamed for her thin figure.  As far as her breasts, "They're real!  I'm not pulling a Montag."  So maybe she hasn't had 10 plastic surgery procedures in one day, but I definitely think she's close to having ten in her lifetime!

Either way, Ms. Griffin was looking fantastic and credited her style to Mr. Robert Verdi, who I love.  Way to work the carpet lady!

Monday's Muse

This Monday's Muse in Tina Fey.

You would have thought she was playing one of her comedic roles at the Golden Globes this year when she showed up on the red carpet wearing a patterned, tiered dress that made her look like little Bo Peep.  Believe it or not it was by Zac Posen!  It just goes to show that just because you scored a dress by a hot designer doesn't mean you should wear it.

However a week later at the SAG awards the sun came out and beamed right down on Miss Fey as she held her head up high and walked the red carpet looking hotter than ever (even though she knew she was destroyed by the press for last weeks gown).  Her deep purple Ferragamo dress hugged her bod in all the right places and she looked absolutely stunning.

Cheers to Tina Fey's red carpet rebound!

Achieve A-List Arches

Besides the nominees, brow guru, Anastasia Soare, was a VIP at the Golden Globes this year as well.  You can credit her for the perfectly shaped arches of Julianna Margulies, Penelope Cruz, Jane Adams, Fergie, Elizabeth Moss and Jennifer Graner.

“Award Shows and red carpet events are really the perfect time to vamp up with a glam look. The stars will be very glamorous and not in everyday clothes so their brows should embody the glamour of Hollywood," remarked Anastasia.

Like her work?  Here are some tips from Anastasia on how to get red carpet brows:

  • If waxing, be sure to do it 3-6 days before an event.  After a wax your skin color can become a little lighter and if given a few days your skin will have time to calm down
  • Ask for them to be high arched and keep them somewhat full
  • Highlight the corner of the brow with a pencil

I always suggest keeping your brows in the hands of professionals, but if you can definitely maintain them at-home.  Anastasia has great brow grooming kits that contain everything you need to keep your arches in check.  Check them out here.

2010 Golden Globes Beauty Awards

Even though all of the Golden Globes nominees and presenters strutted their stilettos through puddles and found themselves battling umbrellas, most of them managed to light up the red carpet tonight.  After watching E!'s pre-show coverage of the highly anticipated red carpet arrivals and interviews I came up with BeautySweetSpot's 2010 Golden Globe Beauty Awards.

Here are the top 5 best overall hair and makeup:

Olivia Wilde of House, which was nominated for Best Drama, wore a sparkling black Gucci gown with a deep plunging neckline that flattered her sexy bod in a classy way.  Striking jet black eye liner helped to create a cat eye effect with smudged out dark shadow.  She got it right by keeping her lips and cheeks to a minimum.

Fergie of Nine, which was up for five nominations!  The singer/actress showed up with husband Josh Duhamel, wearing an elegant lilac floor length dress. Love her brunette locks, and I have to be honest, I don't always think she's a looker, but tonight, she got it right.

Kate Hudson of Nine always looks effortlessly chic.  I was more into her hair and makeup then her Marchesa gown.  The soft updo paired with pearl tassel earrings looked stunning on Kate.

January Jones of Mad Men rocked the red lip and she got it right.  Keeping her eye makeup to a minimum and not letting accessories take away from the look.  Never mind pairing it with a chic updo and black satin headband. Love.

Penelope Cruz, of Nine donned a Giorgio Armani Prive black mermaid gown on the red carpet.  Her curls are very Hollywood, skin is glowing and makeup shades compliment her skin and hair color.
