Behind the Look: Fiona Stiles

fiona-stilesShe works with some of Hollywood's leading ladies like Jennifer Garner, Nicole Richie and Jessica Alba, but in her spare time, she managed to launch a new beauty retail site, ShopReedClarke, which I find to have a well curated collection of tools, accessories and beauty needs.  Here, she fills us in on her inspirations and all time favorite beauty products.

What’s your beauty philosophy?

I try to make women look like the best version of themselves without feeling like they're hiding behind a bunch of makeup. I want every woman who's makeup I do to look in the mirror and feel amazing.

What inspires you?

Art, strong women, people on the street... I love to see how people interpret makeup trends and incorporate them into their daily routine. I love art books and of course I love fashion magazines... I can't help it, the fantasy of it all gets me every time.

What are the top five must-haves in your kit and why?

a. The beautyblender. I can't work without this product, and the imposters are sub-par and a total waste of money. It's a fantastic tool to add to your beauty arsenal.

b. Charlotte Tibury Film Star Bronze & Glow highlighting and cointour palette. So perfect and easy for creating a sculpted face. I didn't know I could live without it until I tried it.

c. White Diamond Lustre perfume. I don't wear a lot of makeup when I'm at work because frankly, it's not about me, it's about my client. That said, I won't leave the house without perfume because I feel like it completes my look. I love the warm floral and citrus scent, it just makes me a bit more glamorous. I have a little extra bottle that I carry around in my kit for when I feel like I need a pick-me-up.

d. Tom Ford mascara. It's lush and inky black and you can get some serious volume and definition with that mascara. And I love, love love lashes so a great mascara is mandatory.

e. Laura Mercier brushes. The shapes and quality of these brushes are amazing. Having the right tools for the job makes all the difference in the application of your makeup and her brushes are just perfect, especially the range of brushes for the eyes.

Have you discovered any new products lately that you find impressive?

I recently discovered a line called Rituel de Fille. They're products are 99% natural and the colors are just amazing. It's a small line, but I am crazy about everything they have. And the fact that their makeup has such great color pay off with such a short ingredient deck is really, really impressive.

Stay out of the sun. At best, it ages you. At worst, it can kill you. Invest in a great sunscreen a good hat and stay in the shade.

Sabrina Bedrani Headshot 2014[1]

Recently responsible for Felicity Jones's makeup look at the Golden Globes, Celebrity Makeup Arits, Sabrina Bedrani, is known for creating clean, beautiful looks.  With a roster of clients like Sandra BullockJulianne Moore, Michelle Williams, Lizzy Caplan, and Elizabeth Moss, I'm sure you've seen her work before. Here, she dishes on her go-to beauty products and advice to live by (for all of you lovers of a red lip)!

Describe the most exciting project you’ve worked on lately. I recently worked on an editorial shoot with Peter Lindbergh and Amber Valletta. Even though I worked with Peter quite often now, having Amber there made it such an iconic Peter Lindbergh shoot, like the ones I used to look at in magazine when I dreamed of being a makeup artist.

What’s your beauty philosophy?

I always try to have a fresh, youthful approach to my makeup. I believe you should enhance one’s beauty with makeup, not hide them behind it.

What are the top five must-haves in your kit and why?

sabrina-bedri

1- Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler, nothing opens up the eye more than nicely curled lashes, and the Shu Uemura is just the best one on the market, it fits any kind of eye shape.

sabrina-bedrani

2- Dior Crayon Eyeliner Waterproof in Trinidad Black, because I can create so many looks just with that one pencil, you can just put it inside of the eye on the waterline, or line the eye all around, use it to line just the top along the lash line for a cat eye, or use it all over the lid and smudge it ( with fingers or the little sponge at the end) for a smokey eye, and it won’t budge.

sabrina-bedrani

3- Orlane Super Moisturizer Light Cream, because it really moisturizes without leaving a greasy film, it absorbs quickly and leaves the skin supple and ready for your makeup application. sabrina-beldrani

4- Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder, because it’s the perfect for under the eye, it seals the concealer, brightens the eye, but it’s super light so it won’t stay in the lines. Most powder are too heavy for the delicate under eye skin. sabrina-beldrani

5- Dior Eyeshadow 5 CouleursCuir Canage, It has the perfect fall colors for day and night. You can use the colors separately, the lightest one is perfect for day time alone or along with the 2 other Medium tone ones ( one more brown the other more plum). The darkest color can also be used on its own or added to the other ones for a more dramatic look. Perfect for going from a daytime to nighttime look. And it is flattering on everyone.

Have you discovered any new products lately that you find impressive? Talika Eye Therapy Patch, Charlotte Tilbury foundations, Dior Fushion Mono Eyehadow.

Spill your best beauty advice.

Don’t over pluck your eyebrows. let them grow, it’s more youthful to have full eyebrows, and if you don’t know how to do it, don’t touch them, go see a professional.

What’s the one tip or trick that you think all women should know?

If you wearing red (dark) lipstick, the best way to make it last is to apply a lip liner all over your lips before putting on your lipstick. It will make it long lasting and it won’t bleed.

Breath Mints - You have to get up close and personal with clients as a makeup artist and nothing can ruin a makeover experience quite like bad breath.

Glycerin - I mix this with water and put the combination in a spray bottle to create radiant, glowing skin all over the body on photo shoots. To really amp up the glow factor, I also mix in a bit of my Auto Pilot Radiance-Boosting Primer. The result is gorgeous, super shiny skin.

What’s the one tip or trick that you think all women should know?

Always use a primer! I can’t say it enough - not to prime IS a crime! One of the makeup mistakes women make is not allowing their foundation to become one with their skin, and primer is an easy but effective solution. It ensures a smooth landing for your base and keeps skin looking fresh all day long. My Auto Pilot Pre- Foundation Primer is gentle on skin and soothes the complexion for a flawless finish. If your skin needs an extra boost of radiance, my Auto Pilot Radiance-Boosting primer will lift and flatter the face thanks to its glow-giving properties.

Interview: Alicia Quarles' Makeup Artist

Unknown

Alicia Quarles' makeup artist is a force to be reckoned with!  Keesh Winkler-Smith, makeup artist and groomer for E! News, has the confidence, creativity and talent to create looks suitable for the fierce personalities behind the network.  I had the pleasure of watching her create the radiant yet edgy masterpieces on Alicia's lids throughout filming the Dove commercials and working the Emmys red carpet.  Here, she fills me in on her inspirations, craft, and makeup bag must-haves.

I was so impressed by the looks you created for Alicia for the Dove commercials and Emmy red carpet. What inspired you?

I am inspired by everything in life around me. Magazines, blogs, other artists…. When I see my clients I like to feel out their personality and I also take in account their choice in wardrobe and accessories for the event. I always get a instant idea of what I am going to do for the occasion. For both Dove commercials I kept Alicia very Fresh & Radiant to capture her natural glow & beauty. I used a purple eyeshadow shade as a bottom eyeliner with a angle brush for application to pick up the natural hues in her beautiful purple dress making what I call  "Pop Of Color"  to intensify the complete look.

For Red Carpet Emmy's Alicia's wore a beautiful deep royal blue gown with beautiful Green & Blue accessories for the. I decided to apply a Golden yellow shimmer eyeshadow, a soft brown shade in the crease and a neutral tone on her brow bone. I kept her lips a very soft nectar shade and I used bronzer instead of blush.

Regardless, if I am doing television, Red Carpet affair, Photo Shoots, Bridal or Editorial work I always stick to my "makeup mission" of course depending on my clients needs. I believe in always keeping a clean and simple face with "A Splash of Color".

Do you and Alicia collaborate on her looks or do you just work your magic?

I actually just work from my natural instincts that I was lucky enough to be Blessed with. It's also great because Alicia trusts my vision and gives me full control to be creative. This helps a lot because I am able to just do my thing without over thinking.

You seem to always play up her eyes, how come?

I believe the eyes are the window to your soul... Eyes have always been my favorite and most exciting part of application to the face! I get to be creative using color while applying my own signature style and concept depending on the look.

Your use of color is abundant, yet strategic.  Can you give us a tip on how to incorporate color into a look without over doing it?

I like to use a technique I call "POP OF COLOR" using either a color liner on bottom or using a bright shade on the lid with a very natural crease and highlighter. Knowledge of the color wheel and what colors are complimentary is essential when I decide to apply color.  My mantra is "COLOR IS YOUR FRIEND", with that in mind and paired with a few pairs of lashes yes, I said a few pairs!  Have fun with it because it all washes down the drain at the end of the day.

What are some of the staples in your kit and why?

I absolutely love these products and I have also listed reasons why I keep them in my kit:

  • Ardell eyelashes : they add fullness with a slight glam look. I love to cut them up and create my own personal touch.
  • Mac Mineralize Skin Finish Natural Powder : provides a very flawless finish without looking too heavy on skin.
  • Makeup Forever Eyeshadows : They have a great pay off - the pigmentation is rich and very easy to blend. Also they come in FUN COLORS!
  • Murad skin care: because makeup looks even better with healthy skin underneath. I encourage all my clients to stick to a regiment. (Clarifying Cleanser, Renewing Eye Cream, Oil Control Mattifier w/SPF 15 | PA++)

Murad also has a wonderful skin specific treatments and anti-aging products. Pretty much I am in love with the entire line as their products are so good. You can use alone or under makeup.

The Trick to Instant Red Carpet Skin

I just got off of the phone with the makeup artist who's been responsible for Kate Mara's looks throughout the past nine years,  Coleen Campbell-Olwell.  Believe it or not, after 13 years of creating red carpet looks, this awards season is still giving her the jitters.  The House of Cards actress has Coleen booked today through Sunday for Golden Globes festivities.  Of course she'll be wearing different looks, but the key to perfect makeup all boils down to one thing – perfect skin.  Here, Coleen dishes how she gives her clients red carpet skin – instantly.

"Everybody's skin is different, but dehydration is one of the biggest and most common challenges when doing red carpet makeup," Coleen explains.  "Because my clients are flying a lot and constantly wearing makeup, I need to find products that'll hydrate their skin immediately."

During awards season, about an hour and a half is allotted to hair and makeup.  Yes, that's it. So there's no time for fancy tricks.  When I asked her about facials she said, "I recommend my clients get a facial a week before a big event, but no closer, because you never know if they're going to breakout or peel afterwards."

All of the real magic happens in her chair.   "I didn’t have great skin when I was younger, so I'm very careful about the skincare products I use on my clients and test them out on myself first," she explains.  Leaving no room for reactions, her two go-go's are Orlane Super Moitsturizing Light Cream and Absolute Skin Recovery Care Eye Contour.  "The creme hydrates instantly without being greasy and I find that most eye creams are too rich, but this eye contour is the perfect consistency and gets rid of puffiness."

Of course, the right products create a great base for makeup application and help make the look last all night, but it's the way Coleen applies them, that takes the whole look up a notch. "I use the slip in the moisturizer to massage the skin working outwards, which helps to pull out any excess fluid in the face and reduce puffiness," she explains.  Her regimen is to do three strokes on each side of the forehead, from the side of the nose out to the ear, down the neck and on each side of the chin.

The Exact Products Used to Get Beth Behrs's Look

Whenever there's a red carpet to watch, I stalk makeup artist, Jamie Greenberg's work.  Sure enough, she killed it again last night by giving Two Broke Girls star, Beth Behrs a look like no other.  While I noticed nude lips were dominating the red carpet last night at the People's Choice Awards, she gave Beth a punchy coral pout and it worked.  Here are details from Jamie on exactly what products were used to get Beth's look and behind the scenes pics.

1. Prep the face with Laura Mercier Hydrating Foundation Primer and then apply mark's Got The Goods Multi-Benefit Foundation Lotion SPF 15 all over.

2. Apply mark's Super Conceal Full Coverage Concealer under the eyes, then sweep mark's Touch and Glow Shimmer Cream Cubes across cheekbones.

3. Next, apply mark's Please Hold Eye Primer all over the eye lid and apply mark's On The Dot Smokey Color Compact in navy (bottom right shade) to the outer corners of the eye.

4. Line the top lash line with Avon's SuperShock Gel Eye Liner Pencil in Blackout and the bottom lash line with mark's No Place To Run Longwear Eyeliner in Jet Set.

5. Finish the eyes with three layers of Ardell Natural Individual Lashes and two coats of bareMineral Flawless Definition Waterproof Mascara.

6. Complete the look with mark's Lipclick Full Color Lipstick in Coral Fixation.

How to Find A Wedding Day Makeup Artist

With seven months to go, Joe and I have our biggest wedding vendors booked and I'm concentrating on perhaps the biggest decisions of the day.  Who will do my hair and makeup?  Yes, I'm blessed to work in an industry where I know so many, but this is personal.  I had a gut feeling about my makeup artist, already had my trial with her and booked her!  Planning a wedding?  Here's what you need to know about going for a makeup trial and nailing the right artist for your big day.

I met my wedding day makeup artist, Maribeth Madron, at an industry event in the beginning of the summer.  Since, she's been shaping my brows monthly and I've come to learn of her background and expertise as a makeup artist who's worked extensively for brands like Laura Mercier and is currently the Global Brow Expert for Maybelline.  A true artist, with positive, yet calm energy, I knew I'd be in good hands.  My trial proved my gut instinct was on point and I couldn't be more excited to work with her.

Typically, you should schedule your makeup trial six months to a year before your wedding day, because that's how far out makeup artists book up.  If you're working with a strict budget, the sooner the better since it may climb.

Here are her tips on how to find a good wedding day makeup artist:

1. Start with referrals. Personal referrals mean so much more than written reviews or ratings.  "You need to remember that reviews are subjective and sometimes work isn't good or bad," comments Madron.  "People have very different tastes and a good makeup artist will listen and do what the bride wants."

2. Find someone you're comfortable with.  "Sometimes you can tell just by looking at them," she laughs.  She's right.  If you're going to department store makeup counters to shop for an artist, steer clear of those with drag queen like looks.  Counters you may want to check out: Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown, Lancome.

3. Make sure they're calm.  Remember, it's your day and you're going to be nervous, excited and emotional.  The last thing you need is for your glam squad to be adding to your anxiety.  After all, isn't that what your mom's for?

4. Always bring photos.  "Photos say a thousand words," Madron explains. Your idea of natural may not be the same as someone else's.  Bring as many photos as you'd like to your trial and even bring some of your makeup along, too. It's good for your prospective makeup artist to know what colors you feel comfortable wearing on a daily basis.  Looking for photos? Check out my wedding day wishes pinterest board with tons of wedding day makeup inspiration shots.

5. Check out your makeup in different lighting.  Remember, your one makeup application needs to look good in daytime, nighttime, candle light and potentially, even in different climates.  After your trial, wear your makeup around for a while in different settings to see how it works.

The Capitol's Official Makeup Artist Talks Catching Fire

The suspense is killing me.  The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be in theaters in less than a month and thanks to CoverGirl, the series is already top of mind again. Not only did the brand come up with a new, limited edition Capitol collection, but they even have a "Capitol makeup artist" on the roster, Dotti, who created a look for each district.  I had the opportunity to chat with her about coming up with the looks and found out how you can recreate them for Halloween. It's such an honor to be asked to create the looks for 'Catching Fire!'  How did the creative process start and who was involved?

There were so many people involved! Of course the creative team from the ad agency, hairstylist, stylist, photographer and more – we were all involved in the process.

I reviewed the 12 looks from an artist perspective so we bounced around ideas with play on words and visuals to fine tune the looks I created. We all did intensive research on The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and although as a make-up artist I was responsible for the make-up looks, we truly collaborated as a team.

When did you read the series and what other research or preparation did you do to capture the characters of each district?

Reading books and seeing a film have quite a different effect on how you see the districts and the Capitol. I think a mixture of both was a good place to start for myself personally.

Which look was your favorite to create and why are you partial to it?

I was partial to more than one look for reasons being texture, the color palette, and the district itself and what it evoked in me to create their looks. I can’t pick just one so here are a few of my favorites:

Mining, Livestock, Masonry, Technology, Textiles, Grain, Agriculture.

I love how you added canary yellow in the corners of the eye for District 12: Mining.  It's unexpected.  Where did that come from?

Without sounding morbid, miners would take a canary with them always into the mines so as to gauge the danger levels of the air in the mine. So there is true referencing to canary yellow with this look.

About how long did it take to come up with and perfect each look?

Some of the looks came together on the first go but others took a few times. Sometimes you just have to walk away to see everything with fresh eyes. It was an ongoing organic process.

They're fun to recreate for Halloween!  Do you have any tips for those who want to try them at home?

Check out the Capitol Beauty Studio for how to recreate the looks. It’s so fun to explore – I love it!

Backstage Beauty Report: Elle Fashion Next

You're going to love this look.  The first backstage I covered this season was a bit off-beat, but the makeup look was far from it thanks to Maybelline New York.  A dramatic winged cat eye, soft, matte skin and sheer nude lips.  Wearable and easy to achieve.   The show, Elle Fashion Next, where emerging talent from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago are given a chance to showcase their work, was a great success.  Here, of course, is my backstage beauty report.

Being that there were many students showcasing their unique styles, it was important for the lead Maybelline New York Makeup Artist, Gabriel Almodovar to add consistency to the show through makeup.  Since the winged cat eye was the main focus, he instructed his team to use whatever it took to make sure it was done right.  His secret?  Using Maybelline 's EyeStudio Master Drama Cream Pencil Eyeliner in Midnight Master, since it glides on so easily, with an angled brush to create the preciseness and draw it out to a crisp point.

Everyone, even the models, were buzzing about the new lipcolor that Maybelline is launching this November called Color Elixir.  This is one I for sure, have to get my hands on!  It's a perfect hybrid between a lipstick, gloss and balm. The models were all wearing a sheer nude called Glistening Amber.

Charlotte Tilbury Talks Rock N' Kohl

For the first time in history, Selfridges in London held a beauty festival allowing world renowned makeup artist, Charlotte Tilbury, to take over their concept store. She kicked off a week of events called, “Charlotte Tilbury’s House of Rock ‘N Kohl,” featuring a guest appearance by Kate Moss, makeovers and more.  Since I've known Charlotte for years, I got the chance to chat with her to find out what the lucky ladies of London got to experience.  Read on for details and a cool behind the scenes video. Congratulations on wrapping up your “House of Rock ‘N Kohl” at Selfridges in London!  What was your inspiration behind the concept?

I am so honored and excited that I was able to create my House of Rock ‘n’ Kohl at Selfridges. I love the retail theatre, drama and history of Selfridges as it really was the first place to celebrate and put beauty on the map. I wanted to share all of my tricks and tips from backstage and throughout my career and create the first event where we could celebrate the world of beauty, fashion and make-up in the world’s best department store.

What was the highlight of the event for you and why?

There were so many from Cara Delevingne’s incredible drumming debut, unveiling Kate Moss’s portrait, being on the sofa with some of the most influential, inspiring and interesting people in the world of fashion and beauty, the amazing Tilbury Transformations and sharing my backstage tricks, tips and magic cream with some of the most passionate beauty fans.

When helping people clean out their makeup bags, what advice to you typically give?

Always make sure you clean your brushes. Brushes get dirty so quickly and easily and they are a real harbor for blemish causing germs. I use Isopropyl Alchohol but Mac has a great brush cleaner that really works to clean and maintain your brushes.

Out of all of the items in your makeup kit, which five are absolute must haves and why?

It’s so hard to only choose 5! I feel naked without mascara and eyeliner as they really open up my eyes and make me look more awake. A bronzer is a must have for getting that healthy glow, under eye brightener is essential after long nights and a nude lipstick for that perfect pout.

Madonna's Makeup Artist Explains How to Achieve Her Iconic Red Lip Look

Madonna appeared on Ellen yesterday I was amazed not only by her perfect skin, (which she credits dermatologist, Dr. Brandt for), but also by classic red lip that she wore again last night to the premiere of her MDNA Tour documentary in NYC.  I got the scoop on her lip look from her makeup artist, Sammy H. Mourabit, who took inspiration from Marlene Deitrich’s iconic 1930’s look from the movie “Morocco.”

First, Sammy contoured Madonna's lips into a heart shape reminiscent of the 30’s style with Votre Vu's Drawmatic Lip Liner in Naked (coming out in September).

Then, he used two shades of lipstick, specifically Votre Vu's French Kiss Moisture Riche Lipstick in Margaux and Annette (coming out in September) to create a luminous and voluptuous effect.

He applied the darker tone, Margaux, to the outer lines of the lip and the lighter tone, Annette, to the inner lip.  This creates an illusion of a full, dimensional lip look.  You can do this with any color.  Not just red.

Keep Your Lipstick in Place, Lessons from A Pro

Since it's summer I've been sticking with wearing glosses or occasionally swiping a bright reddish-coral shade onto my pout, but it seems celebs are sticking with classic reds.  Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana and Taylor Swift are a few who can't get enough of the hue.  No matter what shade you're rocking, make sure it stays in place as the temps rise. Backstage during fashion week in February I spoke with Kabuki, the lead makeup artist for MAC Cosmetics, and got an awesome tip on how to prevent your lip color from bleeding.

To create the lip look, first use liner to define the outer shape and apply lip balm only to the center of your lips.  This prevents your color from spreading.

Then, take a single tissue (I like to use Puffs Ultra Soft & Strong), touch it to your lip and put loose powder through it to set the pencil without changing the color.

Finally, apply your pigment in the center of the lip and thin it out as you get closer to the outer corner.

The Exact Products Used to Create Jessica Szohr's Eye-Sex Worthy Look

I have to be honest, I first received the pitch about Jessica Szohr's makeup how-to from the premiere of The Internship this week I wasn't too excited (so over her) until I saw one of my favorite Celebrity Makeup Artist, Mai Quynh's name attached to it, which made me scroll down and give the look a chance.  I knew it was going to be good.  Bam!  Let's just say her eyes say it all.  Here's the exact step-by-step from Mai and the products she used to get the look. Eyes: I like to start with the eye makeup because I can clean up any fallen shadow on her bare skin. I applied Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color Shadow in Caviar, along her lash line to the crease. Then, I used Dolce & Gabbana Eyeshadow Quad in Femme Fatale 100. I mixed the taupe and black colors and then applied them to her crease. Then I smudged the black color along her bottom lash line. I rimmed her eyes with Becca Automatic Eye Pencil in Majorca. I brushed on two coats of Diorshow Black Out Mascara.

Face: For the face, I applied Laura Mercier Oil Free Supreme Foundation. I mixed Honey Beige and Suntan Beige to her face. I used both colors to add dimension. I applied Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer in SC-5 around her nose. I set her face using Clinique Stay Matte Sheer Powder in Stay Suede. I bronzed her face using Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Powder in 02. I brushed on Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush in Blushing Bride to the apples of her cheeks.

Lips: I applied NARS Lipstick in Tolede. It's a beautiful soft rose color that compliments her smokey eyes.

An Eye Opening Mascara Tip that Will Change the Way to Swipe, Promise

While there may not be one mascara out there that does it all, throughout my years interviewing makeup artists, I've found that no matter what type of look you seek (length, volume or definition) one thing's for sure – application is key.  I'm sure you've heard it all before: take your time, wiggle the brush in between your lashes before pulling up for definition and of course, mixing formulas couldn't hurt.  However, I spoke with Celebrity Makeup Artist, Jake Bailey, who confessed the ultimate mascara tip that changes everything.

This may seem like common sense, but Bailey explains, "When applying mascara, it’s more important to coat the root of the lash rather than the tip." To make sure you get in there without leaving a mess, fold a Puffs  tissue and place it at the bottom of your eyelashes, where the roots meet your eyelid. Then, apply the mascara from the root and pull it through your lashes against the tissue toward the tip, leaving the excess on the tissue.

Genius!  If you try it, you'll notice there will be mascara all over the Puffs tissue, but not on your eyelid and you can really concentrate on pulling your lashes up from the root without your nerves getting in the way.  Plus, you can do this on the bottom too to prevent raccoon eyes.

Wendy Williams' Makeup Artist Talks Behind the Scenes with Wendy

Since 2008, when The Wendy Williams Show first began, Merrel Hollis has been by Wendy's side creating what he calls her "signature look" every morning at 7am.  I had the pleasure of meeting him backstage when going on the show to discuss celebrity beauty trends and thought you would love to hear what really goes on behind the scenes at the Wendy Show.  Read on to hear what a typical morning is like for Merrel. What’s the most daring look she would ever let you create?

The most daring look that I’ve created with Wendy so far was when I transformed her into Lucille Ball’s character “Lucy Ricardo” and the legendary Dolly Parton.

Describe a typical morning behind the scenes on the Wendy show?

My average day at The Wendy Williams Show studio starts with Wendy sitting in the makeup chair at 7am. After seeing what wardrobe has planned for her, I start with the day’s look before we are bum rushed by 5 producers who all manage to squeeze into my tiny makeup room to prep her for the day. They flood her with the latest Hot Topics and I stay busy trying to keep her attention because I have to have her in and out of the chair in thirty minutes so she can go to the floor to rehearse. When she comes back from the set, I finish her makeup look and then, the door opens to the Queen of All Media.

Unlike her wigs Wendy’s makeup stays consistent, what’s one look your dying to do?

Well, I wouldn’t call her makeup look “consistent” - I would say it has my signature to it - (LOL) but I am dying to do a dark lip on her. She wont let me do it...

The One Makeup Look You Need to Conquer: Jessica Biel's Makeup Artist Breaks it Down

When I first received images of Jessica Biel on the red carpet at the Time 100 Gala in NYC earlier this week I couldn't help but focus on how pretty she really is.  When I normally look at celeb film, my eye is trained to look at trend, color and style.  This time, hair and makeup took a step back and let Jessica's natural beauty shine, which was refreshing.  Her makeup artist, Beau Nelson gave me the scoop on how to accentuate your features and let you shine through. Face

Pat moisturizer into your skin and around your eye area for prep.  Application is everything when it comes to applying your foundation or tinted moisturizer.  On Jessica, Nelson put Giorgio Armani Designer Lift Foundation on a synthetic brush and "buffed it into her face" in small circular motions.

Eyes

Define your eyes with liner and mascara, but keep them neutral.  Use warm, sultry browns and taupe shadows across your lid and into the crease.  For example, here's what Nelson did on Jessica.  "On eyes I defined the shape with MAC Eye Pencil in Coffeeand blended shades from Tom Ford Eye Color Quads in Cognac Sable and Cocoa Mirage around the eyes. I lined the inner rim of the eye with Elizabeth Arden Smoky Eyes Powder Pencil in Espresso. I curled lashes and applied L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black."

Lips

Enhance your natural lip color by choosing a lipstick or lip balm shade that matches your inner lip.  Enrich the look with clear gloss.  On Jessica, Nelson used NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Biscayne Park and Tom Ford Ultra Shine Lip Gloss in Peach Absolute.

Makeup Artist, Melissa Silver Shares Her Absolute Must Haves

Whenever I see Melissa Silver's name on a call sheet I know I'm in good hands.  I first met the celebrity makeup artist at a beauty event for Maybelline and recently when on set for a shoot with Glamour, I deemed her the 'Queen of Contouring' as she sculpted my skin into perfection.  She was my saving grace.  Often hired by major mags and even more major public figures (sorry, can't mention names!), one of her funnest gigs is painting the faces of the NYC Rockettes!  Here are Melissa's absolute go-to's.  You may want to grab some of them... 1. Joanna Vargas Daily Hydrating Cream

I am so lucky to have Joanna take care of my skin, she is truly gifted and has turned my complexion around!  She created an amazing, tightly edited line of products and I carry her serums and moisturizer in my kit.  Every day I deal with different skin types and being someone with sensitive skin myself, I have to use products I totally trust and that are incredibly effective.  Makeup will only look as good as the skin you put it on so my first order of business is taking care of the skin.  This moisturizer intensely hydrates and is NOT greasy, leaving the skin perfectly prepped for makeup.  Plus its naturally derived scent is soothing and I like to spend a minute really massaging the skin so my subject feels relaxed, which makes everyone more beautiful.

2. YSL Touche Eclat

Truly the original highlighter, the one everyone copies but nothing matches its light reflective qualities, fine texture and color corrective pigments.  Used under concealer to brighten, as a makeup pick-me-up and you can even use it on top of makeup and it doesn't get cakey.  I don't know a makeup artist who doesn't use this, it's a MUST.

3. Lancome Dual Finish Powder Foundation

Sometimes I don't have the time for a full foundation application so this with concealer underneath does the trick for a super fast makeup.  It is such a staple - dusted on its own for a soft finish, over foundation for more coverage, used as a touchup mid-day, for color correction, you name it. It stays fresh all day and makes the skin look velvety, plus the shade range is fantastic.

4. Maybelline New York mascaras

I have a variety of Maybelline mascaras in my kit but I tend to use Lash Discovery and the Falsies most often.  Lash Discovery is great for a natural look or as a first coat mascara underneath others to really grab every lash, and Falsies gives you massive lashes really quickly. Plus since I replace mascara so often, as everyone should, I love that it's budget-friendly and so readily available.

5. Laura Mercier Naked Lip Pencil

I love so many of her products but this pencil has captured my heart. So many nude pencils are too orange or brown but this is a fleshy-pink that is perfect.  Great when you want to correct a lip shape but not see the liner, and also really nice to tone down lips that are naturally darkly pigmented when you don't want anything to alter a lipstick shade.

Olivia Wilde's Makeup Artist, Katey Denno, Breaks Down Her DVF Awards Look

When I saw celebrity makeup artist, Katey Denno announce via twitter that she was responsible for Olivia Wilde's dramatic eyes and matchy-matchy lips and cheeks at the Dianne Von Furstenberg Awards in NYC on Friday I immediately emailed her to find out what she used.  Believe it or not, Denno used all eco-friendly cosmetics to create the city chic look.  Here's the complete scoop.

Her overall look was very NYC chic.  What was the collaboration process like to come up with it?

When I arrived she showed me the outfit that Kemal and Karla (her stylists, who I adore) had helped put together for her, and said: 'I was thinking we should play up my eyes'. I pulled out my ipad, where I'd collected a bunch of images of previous red carpet looks I liked on her, so we could have a starting point for discussion. We flipped through, noting things we liked, and things we didn't. Ultimately it took me zoning out for about a minute while giving her a face oil massage to figure out which of the 250 ideas in my head would be right for the overall look. I spoke to Renato, her hair stylist, about his vision, and suddenly the image of how I wanted her to look popped into my head. It usually works like that - if I can zone out on my client's face for about 20 seconds, I can visualize the entire completed look, and off I go!

Can you give me a rundown on the makeup look?

I'm very committed to using as many 'green' beauty products as I can. For this look, just about everything I used was green.

Lina Hanson Global Face Serum: An incredible scent with a fantastic viscosity

Kjaer Weis Eye Shadows: Onyx: a slight shimmer slate, and Divine: a matte smokey graphite gray.

W3LL People Hypnotist Eyeliner- Black: on the inner rim of top and bottom, as well as dotted in between lashes, and then smudged into the lash line on both bottom and top lid using a smudge brush.

Vapour Organic Beauty Atmosphere Foundation: used sparingly, applied with a foundation brush, starting in the center of her face, fading outward. I finished the texture by using a slightly damp beauty blender sponge and roll/pressing it into the skin.

RMS lip2cheek in Smile: I applied this creamy pinky /coral blush with a light whispy brush and then blend it with the beauty blender sponge so that it looks like it’s coming from within, mixed with a hint of the foundation left on the sponge.

Ilia lipstick: First I laid down a layer of ‘In My Room’ over her whole lip, then I blended the more nude shade of ‘Humble Me’ over the middle of the bottom and top lip. I finished with a light application of Vapour Organic Beauty Lip Gloss in ‘Discreet’, applied with my finger, just to the center of her lips.

Her eyes are hypnotizing.  What's your secret for making the eyeliner so precise and making it last without moving?

The skin type and shape of the eye has a lot to do with how well a liner will stay put. I rarely use waterproof anything, because it's just not a technology that's arrived in the all-natural product world yet, so I generally discuss with my client how well liner stays put on them, and examine previous photos of them on red carpets. I've learned that an eyeliner on the inner rim on one person may stay put all night, while the same product on a woman with an eye shaped differently, and slightly more oil in her skin, can wind up a migrating mess. It's often just trial and error, to be honest! The preciseness, however, I can say has everything to do with making sure the liner is sharp when applying, and having the client blink hard, multiple times, to really set the product on both rims.

I like how her lip color matches her cheek color.  What are the rules when finding coordinating shades?

I like generally go for a lip and cheek in a coordinating family - the exception is sometimes a true red lip with a pink cheek. In this case, I wanted to bring some spring-time life into her face since she was wearing all black, so I chose a rather nude lip, and a sheer, nude cheek in the same family, but with more of a pink/peach hue, so as to draw attention to the apples.

Fiona Stiles's 5 Makeup Must Haves

Allow me to introduce you to Fiona Stiles, a celebrity makeup artist worth stalking (on her blog... of course), My Life in Paints, Powders and Pigments.  Her most recent accomplishment, besides just working with Jessica Chastain for the NBR Gala and Rosie Huntington Whitley for the Golden Globes, is becoming the Brand Expert and Celebrity Makeup Artist for Mark Cosmetics.  I caught up with Fiona over dinner at Kingswood in NYC last week where she dished on the five must haves in her makeup kit.mark. Touch and Glow

There's a glowy shade in here for all skin tones. The formula is great on the cheeks as a highlighter or on the eyes as a cream shadow. I love the versatility of this product.

By Terry Baume de Rose Lip Balm

I love the soft rose scent of this lip balm. So moisturizing and silky soft. It's pure luxury.

Kevyn Aucoin Beauty Eyelash Curler

Everyone needs to use a lash curler, it does wonders for the shape of the eyes. It's a better than a cup of coffee as far as making you look bright eyed and bushy tailed.

Darkness Lash Glue

This is THE. BEST. LASH. GLUE. PERIOD. Good luck getting your lashes off.

Anastasia Brow Gel

An unruly row makes me nuts. It can ruin an otherwise flawless face. This never flakes, and the brows are set for the day once it dries.
