You'll never shop for food the same way.
Teaching people how to navigate the grocery store in order to eat their healthiest is one of the most rewarding parts of being a health coach. Once you show someone once, they'll never look at the food store the same again. In honor of National Nutrition Month, here are five simple tips for success at the grocery store.
Plan your meals
Before you head to the grocery store, plan out your meals and create a list to shop from. This will save you time, money and set you up for healthier meals options throughout the week.
Shop the perimeter
Stear clear of the inner aisles of the store. That's where all of the processed foods are. Instead, shop the outer section where fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat and fish are usually located.
Choose "real” foods
If you stick to shopping the outer perimeter of the store, this shouldn't be that difficult. You can always add a little healthy sweetener like avage, and spices to make things more flavorful.
Stay away from "children's food"
Many choose to feed their children food that's labeled and marketed towards kids, which makes perfect sense, but it's not always the healthiest. Instead, feed your children fresh food like you would eat. Keeping the junk out will also prevent you from snacking on those left over spaghettiOs.
Read ingredient labels
Avoid foods that contain more than five ingredients, artificial ingredients, or ingredients you can't pronounce.
