Food as Medicine

ingredients that have the power to heal

When I wrote the post, 6 Steps to Healing Yourself, I covered the fact that there were almost 4 billion retail prescriptions filled just last year.  Believe it or not, the way you eat either improves or damages the way your body functions.  I spoke with Dr. Susan Blum of Organic Pharmer, a new health food delivery service, about some of the healthiest ingredients she uses and what they really do for your body.

A diet high in animal products and processed food, such as fast food, sugar (soft drinks, candy) white flour products (white bread, cakes, cookies, sweets) is known to increase inflammation levels in the body.  After years of eating this way, this inflammation from your diet puts you at a high risk for developing diabetes, heart disease, cancer and autoimmune diseases.

Prevention is the best medicine because in the long run it doesn’t require medicine at all!

However, avoiding these foods, and instead eating a whole foods diet rich in food that looks like it did when it was harvested, like whole fruit and vegetables, and whole grains with lots of fiber, lowers your risk of these diseases. this means that the best prevention for developing a disease is the food you eat.  Prevention is the best medicine because in the long run it doesn't require medicine at all!

Beets

The unique phytonutrients found in beets have been shown to provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and detoxification support.

Dandelion Leaf

A common ‘weed’ from the garden, dandelion is tenacious. The entire plant is useful as both medicine and food. The greens are a mild diuretic, without depleting the body of minerals.  They are a rich source of potassium, iron, calcium and vitamins.  At Organic Pharmer we add dandelion to our Alpha Green and Green Light juices to enhance the excretion of toxins and excess fluids while cleansing.

Nettles

This herb is an all around tonic for the body.  It provides a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin A, C, E, F, & K, as well as Zinc, Iron, and Magnesium.  It can alleviate joint pain, allergies, and hay fever and has a positive effect on the liver, which makes it excellent for detoxification.

Shizandra Berry

An adaptogenic herb that helps your body stay strong even when you are stressed. It naturally supports tired adrenal glands and a healthy metabolism.

Turmeric

An herb with powerful anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants, Turmeric is therapeutic for arthritis and inflamed joints. It is also a digestive aid that helps with bile flow and supports healthy flora.
