What I'm Loving Right Now: Immunocologie

As of late I've been getting a lot of compliments on my complexion.  I'll take it!  But I have to give credit where credit's due.  I've been testing out a new skincare line that I was introduced to in the beginning of November called Immunocologie. As soon as I sat down to meet with the doctor behind the brand he told me my skin looked dry and dull.  "Oh thanks, great to meet you too I thought."  Not that I didn't know this, but I hadn't yet switched my moisturizer from a lighter one to a heavy one for wintertime because the weather was still freakishly warm.  At the end of the day, he was right, my skin didn't look dewy and fresh and something needed to change.

Since that meeting I've been using the Immunocologie Treatment Serum, Eye Cream and Treatment Creme.  I think I really owe this new found brightness and moist complexion to the Treatment Creme, $225.  I swear it's like rubbing an emollient on my face.  When I first looked at it I thought of Vaseline and that there was no way  I was going to wear that on my face morning and night.  But sucked it up and gave it a try.  Since it's so thick I have to warm it up by rubbing it in between my palms before applying it onto my face so it smears easily.  Now, I love it.  I feel like it's changing my skin for the better and heavy enough to protect it during the harsh winter months without feeling too greasy.

Get Holiday Party Ready in A Flash

Tis' the season.  Let me tell you.  With the holidays approaching I haven't had a chance to breathe!  Normally work events slow down a bit, but this year, it seems every brand wants to have new launch events and holiday parties this season and on top of it, I have so many parties with my friends and family!  I haven't been able to breathe since Thanksgiving!  I'm sure you're feeling quite the same way between shopping, entertaining and party hopping.  Because of all of the madness I've had to cut the corners on my primping this year and do a lot of it myself.  Thank God for good DIY products.  Here's what I've been doing, it can save you too! L’Oréal Paris Root Rescue 10 Minute Root Coloring Kit , $7.99

I haven't had a second to make a salon appointment during the week and they've been totally booked on Saturdays so this came to my rescue and it only takes ten minutes.  Not only did it do the job matching my color but it was really easy to use for the every day girl (like me) because the applicator allows for precise control.  The best part – it only takes ten minutes!

Lancome Flash Bronzer Body Gel, $33

Well it is December, but that's no excuse for me to look absolutely see through!  I can literally see the blue veins on my hands.  No lie.  So of course, once again it's self tanner to the rescue!  I've been using this Lancome body gel at night before the day of a party so I wake up glowy.  It leaves a natural, subtle glow instead of a very tan look, which is perfect for this time of year.

Sally Hansen Color Quick Fast Dry Nail Color Chrome Pen, $7.79

Of course I get mani's regularly, but you'll notice I always complain about them chipping within two days, so no - they don't last me through the week.  When I need a quick DIY fix this is my go-to. I love the Chrome color for the holidays because it mimics the minx mani and the best part – it dries in a flash!

Tips on An Everlasting Manicure

A few weeks ago I visited Polished Beauty Bar on the Upper West Side.  Rumor had it that when CEO and Lead Manicurist, Susan Nam did your nails, they don't chip.  Being that my nails normally chip after two days, I had to check it out for myself. I got my mani as I normally would and didn't ask Susan any questions or let her know that she was under strict investigation. Well guess what, two weeks later I interviewed her because my polish was still in tact!  I had to get her secret.

My mani's normally last less than a week, I always get a mani and a polish change weekly!  What tricks do you use when giving manis to ensure they'll last?

I always make sure that the client's nail plate is clean and free of any debris that could have been left behind. Then, I make sure to apply the nail polish in thin even coats.

Besides making sure the nail is clean and the application of polish are there any other secrets to making sure your clients polish will last?  What about the nail shape?

When you go for a manicure make sure that you tell your nail technician what shape you want. That shape should be a natural shape, one that follows the natural shape of your nail bed – so in other words, square-ish with rounded sides. This will prevent nails from chipping and breaking.

Once a customer leaves your salon, what can she do to preserve her mani at home?

To preserve your manicure once you leave the salon, try applying one coat of top coat mid-week. This will give your nails a boost as far as color is concerned, and will extend the longevity of your manicure.

If you're a NYer: Visit Polished Beauty Bar throughout December, get a festive colored mani/pedi and receive a complimentary glass of bubbly. Cheers!

Kim Kardashian:

Her secret is out, “I always style my hair first then pin it back while I do my makeup. Before I apply my foundation I sprinkle Bare Escentuals shimmer powder on my face to get a pretty glow.”

Beyonce:

“I always keep a pair of Ray-Bans handy! And sometimes I put a little gold eye shadow in the inner corners of my eyes—it’s more subtle than white, but it still really makes you look more awake.”

Fergie: Fergie swears by Moroccan oil to keep her strands healthy, "I brush it through my hair and let it soak all night."

Katy Perry: “I pop individual lashes on with tweezers.” Try her favorite - Tweezerman tweezers to apply false eyelashes.

Jessica Biel:

"For Christmas when I was 12, my mom gave me a Lancome cleanser, toner, and moisturizer and said, 'Make a little effort now and it will make a big difference in the long run.'" Jessica swears by consistency for your skin care is the key to keeping your complexion clear.

Latest Obsession: Learning How To Apply Fake Lashes

I've been obsessed with fake lashes lately and have been tweeting for Jeannine asking what kinds you use, which brings me to this article.  You already know your batters are more than just a fashion statement, buy they're also your number one tool for flirting. I had the chance to speak with NYC Brow Guru RAMY and get his top secrets on how to get apply sexy lashes in just a few simple steps: 1.      Apply eye liner and mascara before applying individual lashes

2.     Use a slant tweezers, such as Tweezerman Slant Tweezers, $25 this offers a wider grip than pointy tweezers.  (Katy Perry's a fan)

3.      Add two or three individual lashes to your outer eye which will make your eyes appear larger, and more almond shaped, try Ardell eyelashes, $20 that come in a variety of individual lashes available at drugstores

4.      Pick up each lash by gripping it by the end of the lash then dip the root of the lash into the glue

5.      Apply lash to desired area of lash line, make sure to get the root as close to the base of your lashes

6. Keep eye closed and allow for the glue to dry.  Don't rush!

Now you are ready to demand the attention of a room all in the blink of a “fake” eyelash! Don’t worry your falsely eyelashes are our little secret!

Beat Dry Skin this Season with These Nourishing Finds

Winter brings snowy days, cold winds, along with dry, chapped skin. The cold winter weather is our skin’s worse enemy – dryness, chaffing, and soreness from head-to-toe.  I think we can all do without.  Have no fear – more than anything I can't stand feeling dry, so I went on a mission to ensure it won't happen to me, not this year, not ever.  So here you go BeautySweetSpot readers: tips to prevent that horrible feeling and my favorite product picks. Tip #1

Use a good quality body wash like SoftSoap Ultra Rich Shea Butter Body Wash, $5.99 which also moisturize. Some soaps may seem innocent but they actually dry out your skin. This one is super creamy and contains butters and antioxidants to nourish your body right at the start of your day.  Another tip:  The hotter the water, the more your drying out your skin.

Tip #2

Post shower, apply moisturizer within three minutes while your skin's still damp.  It allows the moisture to seep deeper into your skin.   My favorite is Olay Quench Plus Touch of Sun Body Lotion, $8.49.  The Quench line of Olay products are super moisturizing, but not too heavy or sticky and this one acts a gradual self tanner.

Tip #3

Don’t forget your hands and feet. Apply a cream specifically formulated for hands and feet each day.  They tend to be a bit richer than normal body lotions.  After applying, wear socks to help your feet soak in the moisture. My favorite hand cream by far is Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Moisture Hand Cream, $17.  I also love L'Occitane Shea Butter Hand and Foot Cream Duo, $15.  Plus, it's much more pocket friendly.

Tip #4

Apply lip balm throughout the day, such as Burt's Bees Nourishing Balm with Mango Butter, $2.99. Your lips can get super chapped during the winter months. They're cheap enough where you can have one in every bag, desk, and jacket so there's no excuses for dry lips!

Tip #5

This is perhaps the most important one!  Don’t forget to exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin cells and make all of this moisturizing more effective.  Lush Bubble Gum Lip Scrub, $8.95 and DermaDoctor KP Duty Body Scrub, $44 are my go to's.

My Style Network Shoot

Last year I ventured out to LA to meet with talent scouts for The Style Network and E! channel right when I decided to quit my job and go freelance.  Go big or go home right? Well, right away I landed myself a gig doing a segment on the Emmy red carpet for the E! channel but that was it for a while – or so I thought. Until just last night at about 4pm I received a call from The Style Network.  They quickly interviewed me asking what I carried my laptop around in (my answer: a Louis Vuitton), if I have a pair of black patent pumps (what girl doesn't, mine: Louboutins) and if I can wear my hair straight in a high pony tail (my answer: no, I won't).  I thought I might lose the gig because I wouldn't budge on putting my hair up, but after all if I'm going on camera, I have to feel like myself and trust me, I don't look pretty in a high pony.  They wanted me anyway and compromised letting me wear my hair down... Thank God!

We shot today with some other industry professionals from celeb stylists to designers outside in the freezing cold of Times Square.  So what we're we shooting? A special for Lucky magazine's 10th anniversary on beauty and style trends of the decade.  It airs on The Style Network in December so keep your eyes out.

Eyebrow Threading: Fast & Efficient at Hibba NYC

While studying abroad in India, my fellow classmates all lined up to get their eyebrows threaded. I thought they were all crazy, why would they do that? It just seemed painful, and a little strange. I told Jeannine, I let my eyebrows grow out a little so I could reshape them, and she suggested getting them threaded as she already swears by it. I was a bit hesitant at first, but after getting my eyebrows threaded at Hibba NYC, I became an instant fan. I know it sounds crazy to do such a thing, for all the loyalist waxers out there, but threading allows precision.  Which means it is better for you skin, (no more worrying about burns, or redness) and hair grows back slower and finer. Because one hair is removed at a time, threading allows more control over your brows, allowing you to have perfect arches. The job usually last up to 3 or 4 weeks so it's cost efficient.

Threading is so fast and believe me painless!  It works by taking natural cotton string and twisting it to create a lasso effect that pulls hair from the roots.  I was so impressed by new eyebrows; I asked my stylist if there were any other popular places on my body to get threaded. She informed me that threading is most popular on your face but can be done for any stray hairs after sugar waxing.

My experience was so great today, I am recommending it to all of you. Next time you think about getting your eyebrows waxed, try getting them threaded instead! I dare you!

Beat Fall Blues with A Brighter Smile

As fall takes over my wardrobe, paleness has clearly set into my complexion.  Besides the obvious of using self tanner and bronzer to keep a bit of a glow, I discovered through experimentation another trick to keeping myself from looking as dull as the sky – keeping my pearly whites as bright as can be. My secret – Crest 3D White Pro Effects White Strips, $50.  They come 20 in a pack and I use them once a day for 20 minutes (normally in the morning as I'm getting ready to go to the gym).  After three days I noticed my teeth were definitely brighter and I'm hooked.  I think it's almost like an addiction.  I will say though that the whiter my teeth are, they nicely compliment the naturalness of my self tan, and I feel I beat the blahness of fall.

The white strips work for me in my daily routine, but the Crest 3D collection includes Crest 3D White Vivid Toothpaste, Crest 3D White Vivid Toothpaste, Oral-B Pulsar 3D White Advanced Vivid Toothbrush and Oral-B Advantage 3D White Vivid Toothbrush and Crest 3D White MultiCare Whitening Rinse.

How to Perfect A Flawless Face

I've admitted it before and I'll say it again, I'm not a fan of wearing makeup.  A little mascara and gloss and I'll call it a day in a second.  However, I've had to learn how to do my own face for TV because believe it or not they don't even put as little as a blush brush to your face before you go on air .  That being said, I can proudly say I've learned how to fake flawless skin. You need three things: a liquid concealor for under your eyes, a heavier, stickier concealor for blemishes and light foundation.  Many women make the mistake of using the same concealor for everything, however different textures and pigments work better in different areas.

Rid dark circles under your eyes with a liquid concealor that has light reflecting properties. Dab a few dots underneath each eye with your ring finger and use a brush or your ring finger to blend.  My favorite is Neutrogena 3-in-1 Concealor for Eyes, $10.99.  It doesn't get cakey in the creases under your eyes when you smile, contains aloe and green tea to help reduce puffiness and SPF 20.

To cover blemishes, I use MAC Studio Sculpt Concealor, $15.50.  Just a small dab of this rich formula does the job and since it's has a creamy consistency it stays put.

After perfecting problem areas use a light foundation so everything is evenly blended. My top pick: Purple Lab Silk Sheets Foundation, $34.50.  It's very light, offers coverage without feeling like a mask and is made with good for your skin ingredients such as silk and hyaluronic filling spheres which plumps your skin so you don't even need to wear a primer underneath it.

BO The Smelly Truth & Sure Giveaway

Believe it or not, foul body odor was once responsible for early man’s survival. Back in the day humans used their body odor to ward off hungry animals from feasting on them!  And yes, men and women had to put up with each other's BO!  Imagine? Well, in today's day in age we all know men and women would run in the other direction if they got a whiff of body odor. With an average of 2.6 million sweat glands, women sometimes get into sweaty situations, especially when they see before a date. TGFD!  Thank God for deodorant!

Have no fear Sure deodorant comes to the rescue and is giving away one lucky BeautySweetSpot winner “one year’s supply” of Sure's Invisible Solid Antiperspirant & Deodorant. (details below)

The clear deodorant is available in four scent varieties – regular, powder, fresh, and unscented so you can pick the fragrance that will help keep you dry.

And here's a dating trick: "Smelling a scent or elements of one that your boyfriend sported when you first met can flood your mind with memories and make you feel the same delirious way you did back then,” says psychologist Carol Christensen, PhD, director of sensory and consumer science at International Flavors and Fragrances, Inc., in New York City.

Now for the BeautySweetSpot giveaway…

How to Rock A Sexy, Dark Lip

There's a trend from New York Fashion Week that I've been dying to try and have been recently sporting it on my cross country travels – the dark lip.  No, it's not goth, it's sexy.  But yes, it can look bad if you don't wear it right.  I've been wearing a deep plum that compliments my skin tone (think OPI's Lincoln Park After Dark for your nails).  Below are tips from DailyMakeover on how to make the dark lip work for you and stay put.

  • Exfoliate your lips. It is important to remove any excess dead skin from your lips for a smooth surface. Try Smashbox Cosmetics Emulsion Lip Exfoliant.
  • Prime lips. This step is very important, so please do not skip! You need to add a small amount of moisture to your lips before applying a dark lip color so the color does not look dry or cracked. The key is keeping the matte look without the greasy residue of some lip balms. A multi-purpose primer, like Natural Born Cosmetics Lip Fix Matte Neutralizer, does the trick! This product, primes, adds a bit of moisture, fills in little lines, and neutralizes lip color for a perfect canvas to apply a deep color...
  • Choose a dark lip color. Try Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics--one drop of their Lip Tar goes a long, long way! For blue-red shades, try NSFW or Stalker. If you prefer warmer reds, try Harlot. For the perfect deep-burgundy shade, try Strumpet or Vintage. Another favorite of mine is Yves St. Laurent Rouge Volupté Perle in Mesmerizing Purple.
  • Apply lip color with a lip brush. To apply gloss with a brush, squeeze a drop of product onto the brush and apply color starting from the outer corners of the lip inwards towards the bow of your lips and fill in. You can go slightly outside of your natural lip line but be careful not to go too high. A similar technique is used for applying lipstick from the tube. Instead of applying directly to lips, swipe your lip brush with the product and apply using the same technique.

Now that you have your lips in tact make sure you keep the rest of your face flawless!  Remember the lip is the focal point.

Expert Tips from Tibi's Backstage Dream Team

Ever since I can remember I have been in love with Tibi dresses. I could barely wait to cover backstage at Tibi’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection this season. Every fashionista knows their bright colors and patterns already make a fashion statement. To accompany the designs, stylist chose natural hair, makeup, and nails to keep the models looking glamorous, but allowing the clothes to take center stage. With expertise advice from the pros, you will soon be able to get the look of the runway in a few easy steps. The hair was clean and simple. The models all showed off their perfect ponytails with center parts, and by following these tips from Frank Rizzien of R Session Tools, and lead stylist Kevin Ryan you can get the look too. Start by having the perfect blow dry, the secret is not only brushing your hair, but combing all your hair as well. Make sure all the knots are removed so that the hair will flow. One of Rizzien’s favorite products to use then is Aveda’s Universal Styling Cream to seal in moisture. Also R Session Tools’ round large barrel brush provides easy access, which is 100% boar, has clear single nylon bristles, and a removable pick to section your hair. This will help create volume and bounce. Next, spritz L’Oreal Ellnett Satin Hairspray at the roots of your hair and flatiron straight.  Finally, tie your hair in a ponytail.

Makeup was done by the one and only Bobbi Brown. "I love doing makeup for the clothes that I love," she remarked.  Her inspiration for this season was for it to be a “pretty season,” wanting every woman in the audience to want the look of the models. Bobbi created a radiant face that is finished in a natural way. One standout feature was the cheeks. By using Bobbi Brown’s Highlighter Pen in Pink all over the cheek instead of a highlighter creates a softer look. The eyes were magnificent; Bobbi Brown’s Long Wear Gel eyeliner was used in black ink, and her Kohl Eyeliner, a shadow liner in plum orchid was used depending on the model’s skin color and eye shape. Lots of mascara was used to give definition to the lashes. The lips had a nice natural lip color that was very settle.

Pattie Yankee lead Dashing Diva manicurists and she shared a few secrets to get the perfect manicure at home. The number one rule is always use nail polish remover first to remove natural oils. Then, use a base coat and apply two thin coats.  "You must finish with a good top coat," she strongly suggested.  Try Dashing Diva’s Debutante nail color that was used at this year’s show on both nails and toes.

If you could have a dream team of primpers who would they be?

Toni Francesc Pairs Green Dresses with Forest Inspired Beauty

“Urban Forest” was the theme backstage at Toni Francesc.  Lead makeup artist Jackie Mgido of Mehron cosmetics tied the makeup in this tough-meets-natural look by mixing earthy colors on the face with a pop of brightness at the eyes.  “Keep it natural and well-blended,” she advises, using a small brush to apply light cream foundation “only where needed.”  Jackie sought to promote healthy skin by creating a light glow; Mehron’s Celebra Foundation helps to achieve the look with ingredients like pomegranate and soothing aloe.  Plus, it’s oil free! On the eyes, Jackie uses cream eye shadow in bright yellows, blues, greens, and grays.  She especially recommends cream products in the winter, as dry eyelids take over.  Conveniently, cream shadow doesn’t need a base.  She notes that you can blend cream in nicely with just your fingertips.  Cream makeup translates to cheeks and lips as well; Jackie shows me a palette of saturated yet sheer multi-purpose hues that she uses on the cheeks solo and on the lips topped over foundation.

Hair at Toni was led by Nelson Cartaya of Salerm.  His team “re-created a forest in the models’ hair,” as Cartaya describes, through the intricate full-head braiding that conveyed a “purposely messy yet elegant” look.  The braids, some normal and others atypical, were haphazardly wrapped around the girls’ heads using bobby pins and rubber bands to fasten, creating an easy-going updo.  Products included Salerm Definition Nature hair spray and a bit of mousse, depending on the hair’s texture.  For every day, Cartaya says all you need for a casual look is a good haircut and some good products, sans the fuss.

Skin Is In at Herve Leger by Max Azria

I have to admit, I was more excited to check out the bandage dresses that I'll never be able to afford than the hair and make up at the Herve Leger show.  Inspired by Marie Antoinette I found myself swooning (as expected) over the Spring/Summer 2011 collection. So yes, hair and makeup for me was thrown out the window, but I was curious about something else. How can one make their bod look as hot as possible in one of these body hugging minis? The answer was not far behind thanks to Temptu makeup artist Lisa.  I noticed she was airbrushing the models skin, arms, declote and legs with foundation to cover up any marks on the skin and a highlighter to give an overall glow for the cameras.  Don't have an airbrush?  She suggests using coconut oil to add a sheen to your bod.

Here are Lisa's tips on how you can do this at home the right way:

Experience Backstage at Rosa Cha Through Video

I've been covering NY Fashion Week since my editorial job with Cosmopolitan magazine five years ago now and each season I have a new found appreciation for the art that goes on behind the scenes.  This year, I focused more on video and mixed it into my editorial because I wanted you to experience backstage just like I do. Watch as Ric Pipino explains how to get the chic chingnon and Nadine Luke of MAC explains tips on how she created the bold, colorful bird inspired look:

Betsey Johnson Stays True to Herself for “Le deTour Betsey”

There’s nothing in the world that compares to a Betsey Johnson show. It is a true spectacle, and I was lucky to have the chance to attend her latest runway presentation. The vivacious designer always goes over the top, and her Spring/Summer 2011 collection consisted of her signature crazy neons and clashing patterns. The inspiration behind the collection was simply taking a bike ride through New York City. Sarah Lucero, the lead makeup artist for Stila said, “The look is optimistic, happy, and colorful.” Lucero wanted a “bright, bold green eye”  and accomplished it by wetting Fiji Palette no. 5 eyeshadow and painting it on like a thick paint splotch.  To complete the face she used a hot pink hue on the cheek and Caprice Long Wear Liquid Lip Color (another bold pink) on the pout.

Check out my pick of Betsey...

Nonie Creme, the Founder and Creative Director for Butter London of Beauty.com, created a fun, rainbow sherbet inspired color for the models nails. She applied a Pepto Bismol-like pink color, then Royal Navy, followed by a mustard yellow shade on the tip. “The idea was to create a very pop-art, retro kind of fingernail,” she said. (They did use press-on nails for obvious reasons).

Peter Gray for Redken was the lead on hair, and he was going for an athletic/punk and get this – a road kill vibe. The models sported a mix of dreadlocks, teased waves, and spiky hair. Even though there were a variety of looks, they all sported visible hair bands in bright hues throughout the hair that were made of the same light and loose material as hosiery.

Lead manicurist, Creme told me, “Betsey isn’t driven by global trends--you have to love her commitment to her customer,” and I have to agree. Betsey proves that whimsical, girly clothes don’t have an age, and most importantly, that fashion should be fun!
