Dear Jeannine: How Should I Test My New Skincare?

So many people ask me this!  It's a great question.  How often do you eagerly purchase the latest skincare product that promises to diminish fine lines and wrinkles, rid discoloration and dare I say... make you look younger?  Or maybe you heard about an acne product that even takes care of the scarring.  When it comes to our skin, we jump at technology.  And often times, I find, our eager minds are often disappointed with the results.  What if I told you that most of the time, it's your fault.  Not the products.

How many products you’ve sent to your own skincare graveyard?  You know, the ones you bought, tried and put aside or tossed this year?  Ask yourself – did you really give them a chance?  When brands make claims such as "reduces crow’s feet" or "fades acne scars," those claims are able to be made after a series of clinical trials.  Trials are typically held for a minimum of eight weeks.  Some are even longer.

Truth is, in order to ensure that your skin is actually using ingredients properly, which is why you’re not seeing the results you’re looking for fast enough, it needs to be energized and you need to use the product for a minimum of eight weeks before you can expect to see real results.   As you may remember, I’ve been testing the newly reformulated Regenerist line, (see post here), which has been upgraded with technology that boosts my skins responsiveness to anti-aging ingredients.  So yes, I did notice results a bit sooner.

When I test new skincare products to review on BeautySweetSpot, I tend to test throughout the length of a clinical trial.  Sometimes I cheat and will post a review a week or two earlier, but results do show earlier, just not to their maximum potential.  For example, I've been talking about the Olay Regenerist Multi-Sculpting Cream for some time now, proving its benefits of energizing the skin, while hydrating it and decreasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  Personally, my skin is more hydrated overall making it look much healthier and the fine lines around my eyes are less noticeable. I'll always tell you what's out there, but it’s impossible for me to test every new skincare launch.

Next time you find a product that you believe is good for your skin.  Be patient!  Give it a shot for about two months and believe me, you'll start noticing some differences in your skin.  If by then you don't, it's time to toss it into your skincare graveyard!

Beat the Winter Blues & Energize Your Life

By now, you know I'm all about exuding positive energy.  Have you read The Secret yet?  It will change your life.  NYC energizes me.  Sunshine energizes me. Opportunity energizes me.  The cold, dark winter however... that's another story. Therefore, keeping my mind focused on the law of attraction and right kind of energy takes a little more work.  You too?  Instead of going into hibernation this season, here's how you can energize your life.  It's working for me! Mind - Learn something new.  I'm challenging myself to teaching a New Media class at my old college next semester so I'll be preparing for it all season long.  A challenge!  Since you'll be indoors more often as the weather gets colder, try new recipes, challenge yourself to actually understanding Soduko, read the NY Times from cover to cover.   You get it. Find a new passion or delve deeper into one that already exists.  Do it!

Body - Stay fit or if you're not in shape, get fit.  Just because you classify bikini season as May through September doesn't mean abs aren't flattering all year round. There's no better feeling than slipping into a pair of skinny jeans and actually feeling skinny.  Tip: Challenge yourself to a new workout that really pushes your limits. I'm doing CKO and have never felt stronger.  Remember, pain is weakness leaving the body and for those minutes that you're so uncomfortable, just remember... it's working.

Skin - You know you need to switch up your skincare regimen since the season changed, but don't just slather on thicker creams.  Make sure you're actually doing something for your skin.  Reenergize it! I refuse to let my skin look dull, which is why I’m adding Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream to my winter skincare routine.  The new Skin Energizing Technology found in the cream actually helps to energize your skin, while hydrating it and decreasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  Bonus: Results are seen after just one use!I previously wrote about the technology and benefits (see post here).

Get on my page as the sun goes down earlier and coldness sets in.  Grab a pumpkin spice latte and reenergize your life!

Tried & True: Olay Pro Microdermabrasion Advanced Cleansing System

When it comes to being obsessive compulsive (I'm super Type A) I guess you can say that I'm a little OCD about exfoliating.  That goes for scrubbing, peels and of course, microderms. Whatever I can do to reveal my freshest face, I try – in office or at home especially since I have a bit of discoloration. Recently, I've been hooked on the Olay Pro Microdermabrasion Advanced Cleansing System, which has safely and effectively been keeping my skin smooth and bright.  Now that the seasons are changing, you may want to try a microderm-like treatment, too. Microdermabrasion (an exfoliation treatment that rids the surface layer of your skin) helps to improve your skins tone and texture, reduces the appearance of your pores, treats acne, rids age spots and more.  At your derms office a series of microdermabrasions can cost you a pretty penny.  I'm really impressed by the Olay Pro Microdermabrasion Advanced Cleansing System, ($39.99 at drugstores), because it's an at-home form of the treatment that lives up to it's claims.  After five days of use, 90% of women noticed silkier, smoother skin and a visible improvement in dullness.

It includes two brush heads: one for daily cleansing and one for exfoliating along with an Olay cleanser to go with each.  I normally wouldn't use the products that come with gadgets, because I like my own, but since this is Olay, I've been using them without hesitation.  I use the brush for cleansing my face nightly and try to keep the exfoliating (microderm treatments) to twice a week.  That's what's recommended, but I'll be honest, since I'm OCD, I sometimes go overboard.  Between the pollution of NYC, sweat from the gym and bronzer I dust on, it's nice to remove my 'life layers' and really feel like I'm removing them.  Ya hear me?

Beauty News: CC Creams Are the New Must-Have

It's safe to claim 2012 as the year of the BB Cream.  The first one I received to test out was from Dr. Jart, followed by Garnier, Clinique, Stila and the list goes on... Skeptical at first, like the rest of America, I quickly fell in love and so did my skin.  My first post on the ultimate multi-tasker was back in January, and I knew it wouldn't be my last.  Well, allow me to inform you that your beloved BB Cream is so yesterday as 2013 will be the year of the CC Cream! Again, we can thank Asia for this breakthrough, CC Creams, or Color Correcting Creams, are a better version of the BB Cream offering more skincare benefits for a wider range of skin tones with a mousse-like finish.  The skincare benefits in CC creams work to rid hyperpigmentation and age spots by brightening and lightening the skin and are fully equiped with SPF 35.  After all, age spots are the new wrinkle!

A brand called Wei East, from Japan, has been using natural lighteners like licorice in their creams for years.  They're one of the first to come out with a CC Cream, along with  Olay, who just launched Total Effects CC Tone Correcting UV Moisturizer, $22, in the US.  It only comes in three shades, but don't let that fool you.  The coverage is minimal so they really do work on many skin tones.  Chanel is launching one in the US shortly as well.

Now don't get me wrong, there is still a complete need for the BB Cream.  It's a personal preference!  BB... CC... DD?  Sorry, I had to!

Breaking My Number One Rule, Thanks to CoverGirl

Sometimes you need to make exceptions to the rules.  After all, they're made to be broken.  Right?  Well I've always sworn against powder.  I firmly believe that face powder sits into fine lines and ages you.  Therefore, whenever I'm on set for a shoot, I use blotting papers to control shine.  Powder is the enemy... until now.  Before presenting at the CEW Beauty Awards back in May, I had a CoverGirl makeup artist do my makeup and she wanted to use powder, "It's moisturizing, I promise, it won't cake."  I trusted her and found a new favorite product. She was right.  It controlled my shine and oil all day while I was at the awards ceremony, presenting under the bright lights so I immediately emailed the publicist to find out what this new, mysterious product was as I had to have it.  It's CoverGirl + Olay Pressed Powder.  The PR girls sent it over to me and I've been using it for TV appearances ever since.

I like that it comes in a compact so I can throw it into my bag for touch ups without worrying about it spilling all over the place.  What I really like though is the way it feels on my skin – lightweight.  It doesn't crawl into the creases around my eyes and even provides a little bit of coverage.  It really is a finishing touch for my skin.   What genius came up with the idea to combine the cosmetics from CoverGirl with the skincare from Olay I'm not sure, but it's working.  Perhaps the best part is that it's a true bargain buy!

Summer Check List

It's the first day of summer and the weather has finally shaped up in NYC.  Here are a few finds that will keep you in check without breaking the bank. Sanuk, Thai for the word "fun," these shoes are worn predominately by athletes like rock climbers, surfers, but they have some fun, functional styles for everyday too.  The Sidewalk Surfers are really well known because they offer the protection of shoe, but feel as comfortable as a sandal.  The bottoms flex with your feet.

Everyone wants tousled beach hair and it's really easy to achieve.  Wella Professionals has an Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray that stylists are raving about.  Just a few sprays on on dry hair and scrunch it for tousled waves, no beach necessary.  If you do end up going down the shore and in the sun a lot, I recommend using Wella's Stay Brilliant Color Protecting Lotion to help keep your color in tact.  Just use a few pumps on damp hair every day, comb it through evenly and style as normal.  Check out all of their new launches that just launched in May at professional salons.  Visit Wella.com to find a salon near you.

As we bare more skin we need to make sure it looks vibrant and feels silky.  Olay has a new body collection with exotic scents that's half the price of the leading specialty store.  There's a moisturizing body wash, cleansing body wash, lotion and first of it's kind massaging body bar. The collection really gives you the ability to turn your shower into an at-home spa experience.  Prices range from $4-8.

Something you may not think about right off the bat when prepping for summer fun is your eyes.  Visine came out with Summer Spectrum Relief, the first and only eye drop targeted for summertime eye irritation and redness from chlorine, sun and wind.  It's a beach bag essential!  It's loaded with a trio of lubricants and a redness reliever that works in seconds and helps protect against future discomfort.  To further your eye protection make sure you're wearing sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection too!

Beat Dry Skin this Season with These Nourishing Finds

Winter brings snowy days, cold winds, along with dry, chapped skin. The cold winter weather is our skin’s worse enemy – dryness, chaffing, and soreness from head-to-toe.  I think we can all do without.  Have no fear – more than anything I can't stand feeling dry, so I went on a mission to ensure it won't happen to me, not this year, not ever.  So here you go BeautySweetSpot readers: tips to prevent that horrible feeling and my favorite product picks. Tip #1

Use a good quality body wash like SoftSoap Ultra Rich Shea Butter Body Wash, $5.99 which also moisturize. Some soaps may seem innocent but they actually dry out your skin. This one is super creamy and contains butters and antioxidants to nourish your body right at the start of your day.  Another tip:  The hotter the water, the more your drying out your skin.

Tip #2

Post shower, apply moisturizer within three minutes while your skin's still damp.  It allows the moisture to seep deeper into your skin.   My favorite is Olay Quench Plus Touch of Sun Body Lotion, $8.49.  The Quench line of Olay products are super moisturizing, but not too heavy or sticky and this one acts a gradual self tanner.

Tip #3

Don’t forget your hands and feet. Apply a cream specifically formulated for hands and feet each day.  They tend to be a bit richer than normal body lotions.  After applying, wear socks to help your feet soak in the moisture. My favorite hand cream by far is Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Moisture Hand Cream, $17.  I also love L'Occitane Shea Butter Hand and Foot Cream Duo, $15.  Plus, it's much more pocket friendly.

Tip #4

Apply lip balm throughout the day, such as Burt's Bees Nourishing Balm with Mango Butter, $2.99. Your lips can get super chapped during the winter months. They're cheap enough where you can have one in every bag, desk, and jacket so there's no excuses for dry lips!

Tip #5

This is perhaps the most important one!  Don’t forget to exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin cells and make all of this moisturizing more effective.  Lush Bubble Gum Lip Scrub, $8.95 and DermaDoctor KP Duty Body Scrub, $44 are my go to's.

Body Care Done Right

You can apply all the creams and serums you want to your face to try to maintain your youth, but what about the skin on the rest of your body?  It could be a dead giveaway of how old you really are or make you look even older if you don't pay attention to it.  I always say you should look at your neck and chest as an extension to your face.  There's nothing worse than seeing a woman with a fresh face and turkey neck. A recent study showed that if you maintain the skin on your body as well as the skin on your face people perceive you to be 10 years younger.  If you haven't already, start now.  I'm obsessed with total-body skin care and can only hope it continues to pay off.

I recommend starting right in the shower with Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging Body Wash, $5.99.

It has tackles body skin care... issues just like a good face wash does from brightening dull skin, improving elasticity and smoothing roughness to helping to even out your skin tone.  It's rich and creamy and feels super moisturizing.

Follow up with a good moisturizer and get into the routine.  I know you live by your facial routine each morning and night.  Trust me, treat your body the same way and it will pay off in the long run.
