Determined to Rid My Brown Spots, I Tried Fraxel and Here's What Happened

I've had my post-summer Fraxel appointment booked since summer began and it finally came. The last week of August seemed like the perfect time.  Even though it was right before Labor Day Weekend, I knew my plans wouldn't have me basking in the sun.  Yesterday, I entered my trusty derm's office, Dr. Ilyse Lefkowicz, anxious and excited, but more than anything nervous as I'm big on instant gratification and this is as close as it gets when it comes to clearing your complexion of hyperpigmention.  I was ready to say good by to my brown spots – all of them. So what have I done so far to get rid of them?  Most recently I've been using topicals like Vitamin C, but I've even bleached my face out in an unsafe way with hydroquinone in the past.  I've also done an IPL (targeted laser treatment that gets rid of brown spots), which worked, but obviously like any obsessed beauty guru who is about to turn 30 (in 6 months) I wanted more.  After speaking with my derm about whether or not to do a few more IPL sessions she recommended one Fraxel treatment as it would be more cost effective and get the job done.  I was after a perfect complexion.  Fraxel is a cosmetic laser treatment that helps to renew the skin.  Depending on the setting, it can rid brown spots, acne scars and help diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

Prior to lasering, Dr. Lefkowitz coated my face with a thick numbing cream and I sat for an hour checking my emails as my lips went numb... then, everything else.  She explained that she was going to do eight passes over my face with the laser and I would feel a tingling sensation.  The machine has a cooling agent attached to the laser so I felt cool air blowing on my numb skin as I felt an irritating, yet tolerable scratching pins and needles like sensation. My forehead was the most sensitive and I just kept breathing as Dr. Lefkowitz fried the skin on each section of my face.

Overall the treatment took about 20 minutes and then I iced.  I left embarrassed as I left her office as I looked like I had a horrible sunburn on my face and neck with puffy eyes and cheeks.  Being that I'm so pale everywhere else I really looked ridiculous.  Wishing I had a scarf to wrap myself up in, I did my best to hide behind my sunglasses and ran home.

This week, as I hibernate I'll experience peeling (new skin!) I'm using gentle cleansers and moisturisers with SPF provided to me by Dr. Lefkowicz.  One of them being Cerave.   This time next week my face will be as soft, smooth and clear as a baby's bottom.  The type of setting my Fraxel treatment was set for was key for targeting photo-damage: brown spots from the sun or aging.  Dr. Lefkowitz did mention that treating melasma is tricky and this may not be the answer.  Some patients may also need more than one treatment to rid their photo-damage.  Looks like I'll only need one (I hope).  I'll write next week and post "After" pics to show you how it came out!

Dr. Ilyse Lefkowicz can be found at 875 5th Ave, New York, New York 10065.  Call her for an appointment at (212) 288.3200.

Beat Dry Skin this Season with These Nourishing Finds

Winter brings snowy days, cold winds, along with dry, chapped skin. The cold winter weather is our skin’s worse enemy – dryness, chaffing, and soreness from head-to-toe.  I think we can all do without.  Have no fear – more than anything I can't stand feeling dry, so I went on a mission to ensure it won't happen to me, not this year, not ever.  So here you go BeautySweetSpot readers: tips to prevent that horrible feeling and my favorite product picks. Tip #1

Use a good quality body wash like SoftSoap Ultra Rich Shea Butter Body Wash, $5.99 which also moisturize. Some soaps may seem innocent but they actually dry out your skin. This one is super creamy and contains butters and antioxidants to nourish your body right at the start of your day.  Another tip:  The hotter the water, the more your drying out your skin.

Tip #2

Post shower, apply moisturizer within three minutes while your skin's still damp.  It allows the moisture to seep deeper into your skin.   My favorite is Olay Quench Plus Touch of Sun Body Lotion, $8.49.  The Quench line of Olay products are super moisturizing, but not too heavy or sticky and this one acts a gradual self tanner.

Tip #3

Don’t forget your hands and feet. Apply a cream specifically formulated for hands and feet each day.  They tend to be a bit richer than normal body lotions.  After applying, wear socks to help your feet soak in the moisture. My favorite hand cream by far is Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Moisture Hand Cream, $17.  I also love L'Occitane Shea Butter Hand and Foot Cream Duo, $15.  Plus, it's much more pocket friendly.

Tip #4

Apply lip balm throughout the day, such as Burt's Bees Nourishing Balm with Mango Butter, $2.99. Your lips can get super chapped during the winter months. They're cheap enough where you can have one in every bag, desk, and jacket so there's no excuses for dry lips!

Tip #5

This is perhaps the most important one!  Don’t forget to exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin cells and make all of this moisturizing more effective.  Lush Bubble Gum Lip Scrub, $8.95 and DermaDoctor KP Duty Body Scrub, $44 are my go to's.

Product Review: Yes To Blueberries

When this company first came out I thought it was a little quirky... Yes To Carrots.  But after learning that the line was all natural and focused on carrots main ingredient beta-carotene and other "orange" good-for-your skin ingredients I understood.  After trying the products, I understood the craze. Each year it seemed the brand rolled out with different Yes To lines... and yes, they are exactly what you're thinking.  You could create a garden out of them – Yes To Cucumbers (soothing) and Yes To Tomatoes (clearing).  Out of the three lines I'm a huge fan of everything Yes To Carrots, especially the Hand and Elbow Cream and out of the Yes To Cucumbers line I covet the Soothing Eye Gel.  I haven't used Yes To Tomatoes simply because my skin didn't need the that type of attention (nothing against tomatoes!).

I'm pleased to announce that they recently launched Yes To Blueberries, an anti-aging line, that I can't wait to start trying.  Formulated with of course, blueberries, cotton thistle and paracress flower it's said to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin firmness.  These products will be my new test subject for the next two months.  If you're not familiar with the Yes To collections I highly suggest you check it out.

Get It While It's Hot: KohGenDo Launched in Barneys

It's not often I come across a beauty brand that I absolutely cannot live without, but KohGenDo is one of them.  About a year and a half ago the Japanese skincare and cosmetic brand launched online in the US and just recently they made their big debut on the counters at Barneys in New York and in Beverly Hills.  Get this – Barney's can't keep the products on shelves! Looks like the rest of the world is with me.  I covet the skincare.  Especially the Macro Vintage Essence Mask.  It's one product I'll share only with my mom because it's that good.  I use it once a week and it keeps my skin boosting with a fresh, dewy glow.

KohGenDo recently came out with Gommage Gel that's a gentle exfoliator and trust me on this – you know it's working. Why?  Because all of the dead skin cells and impurities you're rubbing away show as the exfoliant turns to rubbery balls. Yes, it may sound gross, but let's face it, we all like products that look or feel effective.  This skincare line has proven results over time to me.

Besides loving the skincare myself, celebrity makeup artists are cult followers of the skincare and makeup, especially the foundations.  They were used on Angelina Jolie in Salt and recently on the cast of The Reasonable Brunch (Demi Moore, Ellen Barkin and Kate Bosworth).  Ellen Barkin regularly grabs the products from Alcone in NYC whether she's filming or not.  Now KohGenDo's available to us online and in Barneys!  Check out the full range of products and let me know if you'd like suggestions... trust me, I've been using all of the skincare and tried all of the cosmetics!
