Gemini 14: Manhantan's Elite Extension Hot Spot

I've been going to the same hair stylist, Naomi, for about the past three years with some cheating in between, (don't judge!, I have to, I'm a beauty blogger!) but our relationship recently changed when he told me he was leaving my hair salon.

I consider my relationship with him somewhat of a Jessica Simpson and Ken Paves relationship.  Besides my dad and brother, he's next in line of men I trust (it is my hair!).  Thankfully, he didn't stray too far and introduced me to one of the most coveted salons in NYC for hair extensions, Gemini 14.

Conveniently, I happen to have extensions right now too so his move felt right.  The week he started there the salon was all over the news including AOLStylist, because one of their clients claimed to pay $10,000 for hair extensions three times a year!  I was now a new extension client.

Home to starletts such as Julianne Moore and Miley Cyrus, Gemini 14 is glamourous, but the people who work there aren't the least bit snooty.  And even though extensions may cost a pretty penny it's because the hair is real and of the best quality.  Their prices for color, cuts and blow outs are pretty standard for NYC so I highly encourage you to check it out.

Tom Ford Says Pucker Up for A Price

Tom Ford collaborated with Estee Lauder in creating Private Blend Lip Color launching in June.  Yes, the colors are rich and seem to be velvety smooth, but the cost of one tube seems to be absurd!  They're a whopping $45 each! "This is my take on 12 classic lip colors," Ford remarks. "I took the most universally flattering shades a woman could wear and then reimagined them in a modern and authoritative way."

While Mr. Ford may have authority in fashion and cosmetics, I'm not so sure charging $45 for a lipstick is reasonable.  Formulated with soja seed extract, Brazillian murumuru butter and chamomilla flower oil, the texture alone may make it worth the splurge.

One of my favorite bronzers of all time was a collaboration between Tom Ford and Estee Lauder, but it's been discontinued.  So I warn you, if you do decide to purchase one of these luxurious shades, don't get hooked they may not be around forever.

Jerseylicious? Another Reality Lie

I received a startling phone call this morning from a long time friend, Liz, who I haven't spoken to in a few years. Excited to catch up, I was disturbed when she began ranting on the reason she called.  No, she wasn't angry at me, but the fact that the hair salon her and I went to all through high school together and partially in college is being portrayed as pure Jersey trash on E! in the new show Jerseylicious. The salon, The Gatsby in Green Brook, NJ is portrayed to have Snookie-esque, Manolo wearing stylists with a Staten Island attitude.  Since when?  "I went there a year ago and not one person looked like that," stated my friend Liz.  "My stylist is on the show and has completely revamped her look from a mom with red hair to some sort of MILF, it's ridiculous."

I haven't been there since the beginning of college, but it was a normal, upscale Jersey hair salon that had clientele from Warren (The Jersey Hills), Scotch Plains and other surrounding areas.  All of the assistants used to have funky style with unique tattoos and the beauticians were relatable and likeable.  My mom even went there.  I cannot see this salon's normal clientele adapting well to the remake of their stylists and their attitudes all for this trashy show.

What was once a respectable New Jersey hair salon is now a disgrace and I cannot believe it actually crossed over into Snookie Poof's and Paulie D. blow outs.  Reality TV is killing New Jersey and idiots like these salon owners are letting it!  It's amazing what some would do for 15 minutes of fame.  It's reality TV people, get a grip.

Uplifting Spring Scents

The sense of smell is so powerful it can alter and enhance your mood.  Scent alone can trigger emotion, bliss and memory.  Surround yourself this spring by fragrances that are instantly uplifting. Here are some of my top finds: Suave Naturals Mango Mandarin Refreshing Body Wash, $3.49 at drugstores

Start in the shower.  "When you wake up in the morning, your mind is at its most free to be emotionally transported by scent," remarked Dr. Rachel Hertz.

Bond No. 9 High Line, $220 at Bond No. 9 Boutiques

Spritz on a floral.  With notes of purple love grass, bergamot, red-leaf rose, Lady Jane tulips and musk, this light fragrance is a spring go-to.  Named after the NYC High Line that runs from the Meat Packing District to 34th Street and allows NYers to escape from the hustle and bustle, it'll make you feel like you've escaped your busy day.

Crabtree and Evelyn India Hicks Island Living Casuarina Scented Candle, $35 at Crabtree-evelyn.com

Create your own paradise.  This tropical candle brings the scent of the islands to you.  Create the atmosphere you desire no matter where you are.  Burn time: 45 hours.

Lindsay Lohan Goes Brunette

I'm debating... does anyone besides myself even care about Lindsay Lohan anymore? Well, either way, I'm excited because she recently dyed her hair (and extensions) dark brown again and I love her as a brunette.  I got the scoop on the shade.. Redken Creative Consultant and Celeb Colorist, Tracey Cunningham, mixed two shades to accomplish the shiny, fresh color Lindsay's sporting this spring.  Like the look?

Ask for Shades EQ03G Cinnamon and 03N Espresso.  You won't be disappointed.

Degree Natureeffects Improves Your Mood

I have to admit, I'm normally not a huge fan of using fragranced deodorants, moisturizers or body washes. Even though there are so many on the market that smell almost edible or intoxicating, I like how I smell when I just get out of the shower and accessorize with a perfume that fits my mood. However, when I met Degree Natureeffects I gave scented deodorant a chance.

Formulated by fragrance expert, Ann Gottlieb, who's the nose behind Marc Jacobs Lola, Sarah Jessica Parker Covet, many of the Calvin Klein fragrances and AXE, Degree Natureeffects blends nature inspired scents in deodorants and body mists.

Out of the three blends, which include Honeysuckle & Tee Tree Oil, Olive Leaf & Pink Pepper and Orange Flower & Cranberry my favorite is the Honeysuckle & Tee Tree Oil. These scents aren't like other scented deodorants I've smelled before. They're actually very light and refreshing but what caught my attention is that you can smell them just enough to help relieve a little stress. (Warning: You may be caught sniffing your arm pits under pressure!)

Award Winning Sandra Bullock

This Monday's Muse is Sandra Bullock as she was by far one of the Oscar's best dressed on the red carpet this year in a Marchesa gown and ended up taking home an Oscar for "Best Actress" for her role in The Blind Side. Bullock's smooth strands were blown out by Fekkai, who wanted to create a simple, sleek style to compliment her elegant dress. Chanel makeup artist, Angela Levin, created a modern Hollywood look by keeping her skin dewey, coating the lashes with three layers of mascara and popping the lip with Chanel Rouge Coco Lip Color in Paris.

After 20 years of acting, this well deserved award opened up many doors for Bullock.

Curly Cues

With the plethora of hair products lining drugstore shelves specially formulated to give your flat, bed-headed mane some lift, shape, body, and volume, what’s a curly-haired gal, looking to avoid just that, to do? Having tested any and every product on the market designed to tame fly-aways, define curls, smooth locks, and make the hair on my head appear as though it grows out vertically and not horizontally, I have emerged from my journey with two clear winners.  The miracle products:

Frédéric Fekkai  Brilliant Glossing Cream, $23

This thick yet silky hair cream developed by a world-renowned hair guru is well worth the investment.  It uses olive oil as the prime ingredient to promote unbeatable shine while keeping hair in place.  And since you only have to use about a dime-sized dollop, it might last you longer than you’d expect.

Rusk Sensories Smoother Passionflower & Aloe Leave-In Conditioner, $17

Forget stiffening gels and oily serums; Rusk presents a solution with the perfect consistency for dry, thick, damaged hair.  It’s so lightweight, you can barely tell there’s any product in your hair.

Tips for Styling Curly Hair:

  • Don’t wash every day. The natural oils from your scalp will nourish your hair between washes. This will reduce frizz and dryness – especially if your hair is color-treated.
  • Comb it out in the shower.  Before you rinse out the conditioner, use a wide-tooth comb to remove knots so your hair is smooth once it dries.  Never brush dry curly hair!
  • Don’t wring it out with a towel. When you rub your hair with a rough surface like a towel, the friction generates the worst enemy of curls – frizz.  To avoid this bushy battle, wring excess water out in the shower with your fingers.
  • Avoid heat. Excess heat styling (low-dryers, irons, etc.) will lead to split ends.  Do yourself a favor and keep your hair’s exposure to heat (including very hot water) to a minimum.
  • Combat frizz. Apply product with clean fingers through almost-dry-but-not-quite hair starting from about 1/3 of the way down the hair shaft to avoid weighing down roots and inviting excess grease and dandruff.
  • It’s all about the cut. At the end of the day, your curls won’t sit nicely unless you have a professional cut some ample layers.  A straight-across haircut will make your curls flat, lifeless, and will make your head look like an upside-down triangle.  Opt for a bit of body at the top and a gentle tapering downward.

Curly girls everywhere, embrace the challenge!

Women In Need Inspire Through Conversation

Last week I attended an event that Women In Need held called "Conversations with Tina Brown and Alexandra Penney."  Tina Brown is the Editor In Chief of The Daily Beast and Alexandra Penney just launched a new book called The Bag Lady Papers. Women In Need provides homeless women and their families of NYC shelter and support throughout hard times and held this event in conjunction with two very successful women to show that homelessness can happen to anyone at any time.  Alexandra Penney, a well known journalist and author was a victim of Bernie Madoff and lost her life savings at the age of 60.

"The first thing I thought was I need to start working right away," Penney stated.  Instead of dwelling in her losses, thanks to Tina Brown, she began blogging on The Daily Beast.  "My writing was an out pour of fear that allowed me to connect with a community and build myself back up again."

In her new book, The Bag Lady Papers, Penney discusses the fears of almost being a bag lady and struggles she encountered when she lost it all.

You can help the homeless in NYC by voting for Women In Need in Pepsi's latest challenge.

Monday's Muse

This Monday's Muse is Robert Verdi. Last week during New York Fashion Week, I had the pleasure of going to Robert Verdi's Luxe Laboratory and chatting with the celebrity stylist, turned brand himself about his fabulous life and brand new show on Logo, "The Robert Verdi Show, Starring Robert Verdi!"

As soon as I began my career in the beauty industry I met Robert Verdi and was immediately inspired by his passion and drive. This was the first time I saw him since I began my new freelance career. Therefore I took his words of advice to heart, "Be opportunistic, grateful and let it happen."

Check out my interview with Robert Verdi about his new show, dressing Kathy Griffin for the Golden Globes and the hottest things to look for in fashion for fall 2010.

Creative Nail Design Rocks NYFW... Again

Creative Nail Design was the first nail polish company to introduce the art nail design to New York Fashion Week twelve years ago.  At one point throughout the 24 seasons of hustle and bustle, the company created looks and worked backstage for 85 shows in one season.  This year, they chose 25.  I had a chance to speak with Jan Arnold and lead nail technician, Roxanne Valinoti, about their experiences. "This year we're focusing on the quality of shows and design instead of quantity," Valinoti stated.  She credits the professionally trained team and close relationships with designers to being invited back and asked to work the shows year after year.  Each show there are about four nail technicians on hand to cover about 30 models hands and feet.  They may arrive to prepare for the show only three hours before, but the preparation time in creating the look begins at least two months prior to fashion week.

They start with three inspiration boards that show different themes and then meet with each designer about five to six weeks before the show.  Just a few days before the show, the nail team meets with the hair and makeup teams to create a collaborative effect.  "Sometimes we decide on the final nail look at the actual show," Valinoti remarked, "it's not always as planned out as we'd like it to be."

She shared her top items in order to create an instant backstage manicure:

  • Solar Speed Spray, a life savor!  And it smells so good.
  • A thin base coat, allows polish to dry quicker.
  • Creative Nail Design Air Dry Protective Fast Drying Top Coat, it adds high shine and dries very quickly so there's less risk of smudging.
  • Solar Oil, the models change their polish about three times a day and their cuticles get so dried out.  This keeps them from getting too dehydrated.

Check out this video with Creative Nail Design's Jan Arnold as she fills me in on her experience with New York Fashion Week backstage at Catherine Malandrino.
