A Facial Worth Trying at Bliss Spa

Whenever I go for a facial, I'm normally after one thing – clean pores.  To get the job done, I often visit Mario Badescu in midtown, which is more like a factory than a spa. Not sure what I'm talking about?  Check out my review here.  Last week I moved to Hoboken (seriously) and visited Bliss Spa (which happens to be directly across the street from my apartment, dangerous I know) for a Fabulous Facial.   My esthetician, Megan McGhee, was super sweet, yet on a mission.  After chatting with me about my skincare concerns (I'm currently breaking out like a teenager), she recommended the facial I booked along with an added on peel that consisted of a combination of salicylic and glycolic acid.  Exactly what my poor skin needed to help rid my pimples, tight up and make it glow.

I found it interesting that instead of using steam, Bliss uses an oxygen mask to help open the pores before extractions.  "Steam allows for bacteria to get into the open pores," Mcgee explained.  As one who's always had facials with steam, this made me think.  The facial was worth every penny.  While face masks took their time to set, my face, neck, arms, shoulders and feet were massaged.  In the end, not only do I not have a clogged pore in sight, but I also had a full spa experience of relaxation and massage.

I ended up booking one every six weeks with Megan.  Yes, I know it sounds extensive, but I do have a wedding coming up!

The Bliss Spa in Hoboken is located at the W Hotel at 225 River St.  Call 877 862 5477 for an appointment.

Beat the Winter Blues & Energize Your Life

By now, you know I'm all about exuding positive energy.  Have you read The Secret yet?  It will change your life.  NYC energizes me.  Sunshine energizes me. Opportunity energizes me.  The cold, dark winter however... that's another story. Therefore, keeping my mind focused on the law of attraction and right kind of energy takes a little more work.  You too?  Instead of going into hibernation this season, here's how you can energize your life.  It's working for me! Mind - Learn something new.  I'm challenging myself to teaching a New Media class at my old college next semester so I'll be preparing for it all season long.  A challenge!  Since you'll be indoors more often as the weather gets colder, try new recipes, challenge yourself to actually understanding Soduko, read the NY Times from cover to cover.   You get it. Find a new passion or delve deeper into one that already exists.  Do it!

Body - Stay fit or if you're not in shape, get fit.  Just because you classify bikini season as May through September doesn't mean abs aren't flattering all year round. There's no better feeling than slipping into a pair of skinny jeans and actually feeling skinny.  Tip: Challenge yourself to a new workout that really pushes your limits. I'm doing CKO and have never felt stronger.  Remember, pain is weakness leaving the body and for those minutes that you're so uncomfortable, just remember... it's working.

Skin - You know you need to switch up your skincare regimen since the season changed, but don't just slather on thicker creams.  Make sure you're actually doing something for your skin.  Reenergize it! I refuse to let my skin look dull, which is why I’m adding Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream to my winter skincare routine.  The new Skin Energizing Technology found in the cream actually helps to energize your skin, while hydrating it and decreasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  Bonus: Results are seen after just one use!I previously wrote about the technology and benefits (see post here).

Get on my page as the sun goes down earlier and coldness sets in.  Grab a pumpkin spice latte and reenergize your life!

Beauty Through the Decades

Imagine living in a simpler time where beauty was so streamlined that using a bar of soap was considered an effective skincare regimen.  I just received a mailing from the CVS Beauty Club highlighting beauty then and now that made me truly appreciate how far technology has come! You won't believe what woman used to do compared to what we do today.  Read on and appreciate! Skincare

Then: An effective skincare regimen used to include cleansing with a bar soap and smoothing on moisturizer.  Can you imagine?  Oil of Olay Beauty Fluid was one of the first products to be introduced that offered a non-greasy, more luxe texture.

Now: New technology not only allows us to choose the type of formula we want to meet our lifestyles and skincare needs, but also the application method.  Creams, serums, oils and cleansers, do everything from erasing fine lines, plumping the skin, evening out it's tone and protecting it from environmental factors.

Makeup

Then: Foundations came in heavy, very limited shade ranges and women had to wear falsies daily in the 60's as their lashes were their main accessory.  Talk about high maintanence!  Lip color was always in, but the popular shades shifted from screen siren reds to nudes and eventually burgundy.

Now: Skincare ingredients are now incorporated into cosmetics making almost all of them "good for your skin." Foundation isn't the only option now (thank God!) as face makeup comes in a variety of forms depending on the coverage you're looking for (i.e.: tinted moisturizer, BB Cream, CC Cream…).  Most brands have a decent amount of shade ranges, too.  Mascara formulations and intricate wands are now also designed to create specific looks so daily falsies aren't necessary.  Lip care goes way beyond pigment as we now also have texture options ranging from matte to sheer.

Hair Styling

Then: Women used to have to sit for hours at the salon with rollers in their hair to create curls or use an actual clothing iron to straighten their hair.

Now: Where do we begin?  Achieving a salon worthy style at home is easier than ever thanks to all of the styling tools that are available to us. There are even different types of curling irons for different types of curls! Talk about specifics!

Nails

Then: The polish decision was solely about color.

Now: We're all nail artists.  The demand for effects is in full effect and a simple manicure just doesn't cut it anymore.  Ombre, 3D and crackle meet polka dots, chevron and color blocking.

Fragrance

Then: To fit the mood of the times, scent trends changed with the decades.

Now: You probably have at least three fragrances to rotate with your ever changing moods.   Your scent is another element of your personal style and rules don't exist anymore.  Unisex fragrances are more popular and let's face it, if it has Lady Gaga's name on it, it's selling out.

Awaken Tired Skin with Olay Regenerist

Your skin isn't old.  It's just tired.  Did I catch your attention?  That's the exact phrase that landed in my inbox a few weeks ago and of course, made me read the entire pitch.  As a 30 year old woman, if my skin is just getting tired... then it better wake up, because this girl is still convinced she's not aging, yet!  Turns out, Olay discovered that tired skin doesn't have the natural bioenergy levels needed to fully respond to anti-aging products fast enough to show visible results quickly. By giving skin back its energy, it will act up to ten years younger. Boom!

"By awakening the skin you give it the chance to become more receptive to anti-aging ingredients, so you will see these ingredients work faster – seeing results more quickly, explains Dr. Diane Berson, an Associate Professor of Dermatology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University.  "When the skin is energized it acts and looks younger."

With the help of two new ingredients to help energize the skin, Olivem and Lys'lastine, Olay has upgraded its Regenerist line to include Skin Energizing Technology, including its Micro-Sculpting Cream and Micro-Sculpting Eye & Lash Duo, an eye cream and lash serum that does it all – helps to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles and thickens your lashes.

The new ingredients are both antioxidants that are known for their ability to penetrate the skin deeply.  "When you combine these with peptides, which increase collagen production, and niacinamide a power anti-ager that restores the skin’s barriers, you get an unprecedented result: younger-acting skin, faster," Dr. Berson states.

Tired skin?  I'll take that.

Tried & True: Olay Pro Microdermabrasion Advanced Cleansing System

When it comes to being obsessive compulsive (I'm super Type A) I guess you can say that I'm a little OCD about exfoliating.  That goes for scrubbing, peels and of course, microderms. Whatever I can do to reveal my freshest face, I try – in office or at home especially since I have a bit of discoloration. Recently, I've been hooked on the Olay Pro Microdermabrasion Advanced Cleansing System, which has safely and effectively been keeping my skin smooth and bright.  Now that the seasons are changing, you may want to try a microderm-like treatment, too. Microdermabrasion (an exfoliation treatment that rids the surface layer of your skin) helps to improve your skins tone and texture, reduces the appearance of your pores, treats acne, rids age spots and more.  At your derms office a series of microdermabrasions can cost you a pretty penny.  I'm really impressed by the Olay Pro Microdermabrasion Advanced Cleansing System, ($39.99 at drugstores), because it's an at-home form of the treatment that lives up to it's claims.  After five days of use, 90% of women noticed silkier, smoother skin and a visible improvement in dullness.

It includes two brush heads: one for daily cleansing and one for exfoliating along with an Olay cleanser to go with each.  I normally wouldn't use the products that come with gadgets, because I like my own, but since this is Olay, I've been using them without hesitation.  I use the brush for cleansing my face nightly and try to keep the exfoliating (microderm treatments) to twice a week.  That's what's recommended, but I'll be honest, since I'm OCD, I sometimes go overboard.  Between the pollution of NYC, sweat from the gym and bronzer I dust on, it's nice to remove my 'life layers' and really feel like I'm removing them.  Ya hear me?

How Cold Weather Affects Your Skin

I'm not crazily obsessed with having seasons. While I love everything about NYC, I hate or should I say despise the winter. I don't know about you, but my perfect world would be living in NYC with LA's weather. Of course, we can't have it all. As the weather changes, so does our skin and so should our skincare regimen. One of the most common complaints I hear about is acne. Yes, in the winter. I spoke with Dr. Berson, a NYC based dermatologist to have some of your skincare questions answered.

How does the weather affect your skin?

The weather can affect skin in a number of ways due to aspects such as the temperature (when they crank the heat up at work or when you’re walking in the brisk and cold air), and the moisture in the air. One skin care plan typically does not accommodate all types of weather that can happen throughout the year, so you need to be attuned to your individual skin needs.

Why does colder weather sometimes cause acne?

Cold weather can be accompanied by dry air, and with dry air skin tends to lose moisture. Winter breakouts can happen sometimes due to changes in temperature and the harsh winter weather. Although your skin gets dry, I don’t advise stopping your acne treatment. Taking medication as prescribed or directed is imperative to getting your acne under control or, better yet, clearing your skin up completely. Look to couple your acne treatment with a nice, gentle moisturizer and try applying that to your skin before your acne medication.

Do you have any tips for someone who gets seasonal acne? How should a person’s regimen change as the seasons change?

My biggest recommendation to those dealing with changing weather is to be sure that you are adjusting your skin care routine appropriately. Use a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Control Foam Wash and leave the cleansers with salicylic acid mostly for the summer months. If you are partial to a cleanser with salicylic acid, I recommend using it once a week, since skin may tend to be drier in the winter. Adding a light, non-comedogenic moisturizer in the winter can help alleviate skin dryness in the winter.

At what point should an individual seek a dermatologist?

Even if acne is mild, I recommend setting up an appointment to talk to a dermatologist about treatment options. Acne can cause scarring, so I encourage everyone to make their skin care a priority and to focus on treating their acne as soon as it appears.

What prescription product do you recommend and why?

I recommend Epiduo Gel since the two-in-one product can be helpful for keeping ever-moving people on track with regularly treating their skin. Truth be told, visit a dermatologist if you're seriously concerned with your skin. I'm literally at my derm’s office at least three times a year for different reasons (and because I'm obsessed with my skin). Epiduo Gel, which Dr. Berson recommends is the only antibiotic-free, topical acne treatment that combines two medicines, adapalene and benzoyl peroxide, to help clear up the breakouts you have now and help prevent future pimples from forming.

To further break it down, benzoyl peroxide is one of the two medicines in Epiduo Gel. It's an antimicrobial which kills the bacteria that lead to breakouts and helps prevent pimples from coming back. Adapalene is a type of retinoid, and is the other medicine in Epiduo Gel. It unclogs blocked pores and decreases the redness, swelling and inflammation associated with pimples.

Indication: EPIDUO® Gel is indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris in patients 9 years of age and older. Adverse Events: In controlled clinical studies, the most commonly reported adverse events (≥1%) in patients treated with EPIDUO® Gel were dry skin, contact dermatitis, application site burning, application site irritation and skin irritation. Warnings/Precautions: Patients taking EPIDUO® Gel should avoid exposure to sunlight and sunlamps and wear sunscreen when sun exposure cannot be avoided. Erythema, scaling, dryness, stinging/ burning, irritant and allergic contact dermatitis may occur with use of EPIDUO® Gel and may necessitate discontinuation. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1‐800‐FDA‐1088.

3 Pieces of Skincare Advice from Madonna's Dermatologist, Dr. Brandt

When I landed my first job as the Beauty Assistant at Cosmopolitan, my first breakfast meeting was with Dr. Brandt, Madonna's derm.  Intimidated as all hell, I sat with him at the Four Seasons over berries and coffee and picked his brain about acne.  Last week I had the opportunity to learn about two new skincare lines he's coming out with this fall and wasn't the least bit shy grab him for a quick one-on-one. 1. When it comes to correcting pigmentation, timing is everything

"Patients are coming to me wanting to get rid of their pigmentation.  Truth is, you can't do anything now if you're going to keep going to the beach. You need to wait until the summers over.  Then we can do lasers and retinol.  Otherwise, it's a waste of money."

2. SPF alone isn't enough protection in the summer

"If you're going to the beach for eight hours and reapplying your SPF, you're still going to get color.  Color is damage.  SPF only protects you about 97 percent.  Plus, the heat alone can give you color. Wear UPF clothing and hats and limit your time outdoors.  I don't want to ruin your life, but you have to really balance it out."

3. You're not applying enough sunscreen

"Most people apply about 1/4 the amount of SPF they need.  You need one teaspoon for your face, one teaspoon for each arm and about two teaspoons each leg.  Make sure to reapply it on your face because you always miss areas."

A Peek at P&G Beauty Brands Through the Years

When you think of iconic beauty looks which come to mind? For me, I've always loved Twiggy's bob, Audrey Hepburn's chignon as Holly in "Breakfast at Tiffanys," Farrah Fawcett's waves and Julia Roberts' "Pretty Woman" curls.  And of course I can't leave out Jennifer Aniston's "The Rachel."  Believe it or not, throughout all of those styles and dating back even further, P&G Beauty brands have been there for women to help them achieve the decades’ most iconic looks!  I'm sure even Audrey, Jennifer and Julia have some of their fab products to thank. I spoke with a P&G rep to find out some fun facts about your favorite brands dating back to the beginning.

I feel like I've been using them forever as well, or at least for 30 of their 175 years of existence!  As a huge COVERGIRL fan I got the scoop from their P&G team and found out they made their national debut in 1961 with Clean Liquid Makeup.  Who knew?  Another fun fact, Pantene has been around for 60 years and Secret was the first deodorant marketed to women.

Check out the video below (it's super cute) to watch about a minute of how brands like COVERGIRL and Pantene have helped women beautify throughout the years.  And to commemorate P&G’s 175th Anniversary, P&G Beauty brands are locking a time capsule away packed your favorite beauty products plus today's trends and other can’t-live-without-in-2013 items. Visit the StyleUnited by P&G Beauty Facebook page to vote on which of your favorite products you'd like to see go inside the capsule for others to see in the future when it’s open again in 2038!  Ps: I voted COVERGIRL.

When traveling there are certain things I always need to have on me.  When traveling Italy and there's a constant flow of red wine, public transportation and long days that turn into even longer nights, the items in my cosmetic case change a bit.  Here's what was constant in every bag throughout my trip.  Whether you're going to the beach for a long weekend or transitioning from work to happy hour, you too, may want to pick some of these up.

H2O Plus Spa Hand and Nail Cream - I never leave the house without hand cream and am kind of obsessed with making sure my cuticles are hydrated.  This one is luxurious and the hydration lasted until the next time I washed.

Caudalie Beauty Elixir  - When used before moisturizer this facial mist acts like a toner and tightens pores.  I carried it around because it also acts like a pick-me-up and smells like a spa.

VMV Hypoallergenics ID Sweat Acne and Overall Anti-Bacterial MonoLaurin Gel - I used multipurpose, lightweight gel mostly on my hands when traveling and using mass transit, but it really helps to prevent acne caused by sweat and occasionally used it on my forehead.  It was 80 degrees some days in Florence.

Go Smile Touch Ups – The red wine was flowing and these Go Smile Touch Ups kept my teeth from being tainted.  They remove surface stains instantly and were super convenient to carry around.

Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm - Since it has SPF 20 it's one of my favorite lip balms, because not only does it moisturize, but it also protects.  I chose the shade Healthy Blush because it nicely brings out the pink in my lips, but looks completely natural.

5 Favorites, For Him in Honor of Father's Day

I've come to learn that men are creatures of habit.  My fiance, Joe, has his favorites and likes to stick with using the same brands he's trusted forever.  (Of course, I sneak in new things here and there.) However, Father's Day is a great time to treat your dad to something new that he normally wouldn't buy for himself.  Check out our five favorite men's grooming items of the moment, Joe approved. Tommy Bahama Eau de Cologne, $69

This scent boasts a sophisticated, yet relaxed feel.  Blended with notes of watermelon, tangerine, pear, and ginger layered on top of Tiare flower and violet leaf rounded out by amber, Tonka bean, and Australian sandalwood, it captures the island just like Tommy Bahama's menswear collection.

Lab Series Skincare Simplified Kit, $75

Most men know they need to take care of their skin, but won't read up or consult someone on where to start.  Chances are if your dad isn't already using skincare or has a confusing regimen, this kit is perfect.  It has just the basics, a face wash, shave cream and moisturizer with SPF, but the quality of the products are on par with what we would put on our faces, made specifically for men's skin.

Jack Black King of the Road Travel Pack, $65

If your dad is always on-the-go this luxe skincare set has everything he would need plus more to ensure he has all of his toiletries.  Plus, it includes a really nice travel bag.

Conair i-Stubble Trimmer, $49.99

This beard trimmer has 15 settings built in so dad doesn't have to constantly be changing blades.  It's all powered electronically and moves seamlessly with the contours of a man's face.

The Art of Shaving 3-Piece Manicure Set, $70

While The Art of Shaving is know for their luxurious shaving sets, they also make stainless steel manicure sets for men that actually look and feel like manly tools. This set includes all the little tools men need to keep their grooming in tact like a nail clipper, tweezer and nose hair scissors.

Yes, You Really Do Need to Use Toner: An Expert Explains

If there's one thing I believe it's safe to say we all skip out on (at least once in a while) in our skin care regimens it's got to be toner.  When I was younger I used to swear by oil-stripping astringent to help keep my pimples at bay (eek to both), but now I find my self including toner as an essential part of my daily routine (Phytomer Rosee Visage Toning Cleansing Lotion).  And just for the clarification – no, it's not the same thing.  So, what is toner and what does it actually do?  I spoke with Jamie Ahn, the Founder of the Townhouse Spa in NYC to get the 411. Why is using toner such an essential step in a skincare regimen?

Toners are great for balancing the skin, adding moisture by acting as a humectants and maintaining your skin's PH level.  A balanced PH is crucial for healthy skin – you do not want skin to be too dry or too oily and toners can establish a balance in the middle.

There are so many different types of toners on the market, do you have a favorite that does it all?

My all time favorite is the Dew Perfector by Circ Cell –it has great active ingredients and the best I've used so far.

Do you believe home made toners are as effective as store bought ones?

You can very well make simple homemade toners, but they will have a short shelf life and may not have as effective ingredients- toners these days have much more sophisticated ingredients that make them more effective.

Do you have a recipe for an effective at-home toner?

Mint-Vinegar Toner 1 tablespoon dried mint leaves 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1 cup distilled water

You can also add aloe vera and lemon slices if you'd like.  Keep it refrigerated and toss it after a week.

Chrissy Teigen & I Talk Weddings Over Processo & Cupcakes, Her Advice: Xanax

Bride-to-be and oh yea, supermodel, Chrissy Teigen is one lucky lady.  As the spokesperson for Gilette Venus, the brand threw her a bridal shower on the roof top of The Strand in NYC.  The sun was shining and as soon as I walked in Chrissy recognized me from an earlier introduction at BetterTV.  We began chatting about her upcoming nuptials and then she recognized I had a ring too.  Bonding over men and cupcakes, my beauty editor friends flooded in and Chrissy revealed her wedding day prep to us all.

When I tell you the cupcakes were worth bonding over, take a look.  They and the cake were so well done!  Chrissy's a spit fire (if you follow her on Twitter, you already know.)

"The morning of the wedding, I'm going to be honest.  I'm going to take a Xanax," she said right away.  "I have crazy anxiety and sometimes I don't even remember if I've taken the pill in the morning."

Being that she is a super model, she let us all know that her routine won't change the morning of her wedding compared to any other day, which typically includes "shooting in very little."  Listing things like exfoliating, shaving (with Gilette Venus, of course) and taking care of her skin.  "It's not going to be anything ridiculous or out of this world."

Aside from Xanax, Chrissy was asked, what are three things every bride needs for her weddings.  "Extacy?," she joked.  "Under eye pads, moisturizer and the Gillette Venus & Olay Exfoliating Razor in Sugarberry."  Yes, she's doing the garter toss so smooth legs are a must.

Solutions for Sensitive Skin

Last week I hosted a Twitter party answering all of your questions about sensitive skin and was shocked, but probably shouldn't have been, about how many of you tuned in and fired away with questions.  Sensitive skin affects millions in the US alone and according to the AAD, there are four distinct types — acne, rosacea, burning and stinging, and contact dermatitis (allergies and irritants), but they all share one thing, inflammation.  Here are  the answers to some of the most popular questions I was asked.

What's the best kind of moisturizer for sensitive skin?  What about if I have really dry skin?

While different skincare products will work best for different people, you all want to steer clear of irritants.  Check the ingredient list on your products for the following: fragrance, alcohol, dyes and colorants as well as sulfates and acids.  They're all knowns to be potential irritants to people with sensitive skin.  Try a product like Simple Protecting Light Moisturizer SPF 15,which is free of irritants, oil free and has the proper UVA/UVB protection you need.  Have dry skin?  Try POND'S Dry Skin Cream.

How often should I be exfoliating and what kind of exfoliant do you recommend?

Twice a week works, but make sure to choose an exfoliator that's gentle.  St. Ives Fresh Skin Invigorating Apricot Scrub, has a cult following and is under $10.

Is the word 'hypoallergenic' just a fluff word?  What does it mean?

It's not a fluff word and you definitely want to look for it on the packaging of your products.    Hypoallergenic means that the product is less likely to cause any sort of allergic reaction.  Research and development teams put formulations through rigorous testing before allowing them to use this claim.  For example, Dove's Sensitive Skin Unscented Beauty Bar is the #1 body bar and was recommended by dermatologists (great for sensitive skin), and the word hypoallergenic helped it receive that claim.

All of these sensitive skin products are available at Walgreens and they're running two offers right now.  Get involved.

The Facial Zac Posen Swears By & Why It Works

Zac Posen, Michelle Williams, Julianne Moore and Ashley Greene all turned to Celebrity Facialist, Joanna Vargas just days before the Met Gala to whip their skin into shape.  She's Hollywood's constant go-to and you bet your butt I'll be visiting her the day before my wedding.  I had the pleasure of chatting with Joanna again about what thehype of her facials is all about.

Your Triple Crown Facial seems to be popular amongst your celebrity clientele. Why is this the facial to receive before a big event?

My Triple Crown Facial is an awesome treatment to get before an event and is favored by my celebrity clients before a shoot or the red carpet. I use a mild electric current to drain puffiness, tone muscle and tighten skin. There is no downtime, people love the instant effect and long term, the effects are cumulative. I usually recommend this facial once a month. For someone in their twenties, a facial once a month is always recommended, but this facial is a great treatment once a month for thirty and up. Since I designed this treatment myself, it is only available in my salon.

Can you describe the three steps and their benefits?

Step one, the diamond peel, really removes surface dirt and dead cells. I believe a great exfoliation is awesome and can transform the skin. It allows or all the products to penetrate better.

The microcurrent drains puffiness, tightens muscle and builds collagen. It's like going to the gym for your face .

Oxygen is soothing, healing and collagen building all on its own. It gives anyone an instant glow and gives the skin a much needed boost.

How did you come up with combining the elements of the facial?

I always try to combine the best technologies for my clients so they always see a difference in their skin at the end.

Since most of the results are temporary, how long do they last and how far in advance should someone get one before a big event?

The day of is ideal. If not, then the night before is what I recommend.

Do you do anything differently durning the facial when treating mens skin like Zac Posen than treating womens like Michelle Williams?

Well, we all tend have the same concerns: clear skin, small pores, and everyone wants to look well rested and fresh even when they’re working night and day!
