Exclusive Interview: Reem Acra and I Talk Fragrance Addiction Backstage

When I was invited backstage to the Reem Acra show this season it wasn't to cover the beauty look.  Instead, it was to speak with Ms. Acra prior to the show about her first fragrance launching this October called Reem Acra Eau de Parfum.  Yes!  This I'll cover!  Something fresh!  Excited, I headed backstage and had a one-on-one chat before the scene got hectic with the designer about why her new fragrance gives power to women. "It's about giving power to woman," Ms. Acra remarks.  "This scent creates a sense of addiction."

With the essence of the fragrance being amber, notes of orange blossom, pear, and bergamot open it, followed by ginger and florals such as jasmine, lily of the valley and peony.  It's dried down by amber, patchouli and musk.

"This is not just a fragrance," she states.  "It's part of my lifestyle, because I grew up collecting amber and regularly drink orange blossom so it's very true to who I am."

Ms. Acra went on to explain that as a child in Lebanon she and her father would dig and pick amber from the ground, which is now part of a collection is at the Museum of Natural History in NYC.

Since I'm super picky about my fragrances and normally don't share what I'm wearing, I asked Ms. Acra how she felt about keeping fragrance a secret.  Her response, "I usually tell people what I wear.  By sharing, we're empowering women.  It's a powerful secret to pass on from women to women and the more powerful women we have around us the more power we'll have in the world."

*Reem Acra Eau de Parfum will be available exclusively at Saks in October.

Lady Gaga Fame is Here and I Got A Sneak Peek!

I've already expressed my excitement over Gaga's new fragrance and am happy to announce that it's arrived!  Receiving the samples felt very surreal as a sleek black bag arrived at my apartment with two samples of the black liquid awaiting my approval.  I don't normally get like this about celebrity fragrances as I can't stand the whole concept to be honest, but I think Gaga did it right.  Fame is Lady Gaga. It's the first black perfume, but don't worry once you spritz it, it becomes clear once in contact with the air.  Gaga was quoted saying, "It smells like an expensive hooker," and despite the rumors of her blood being in the fragrance, it is very much a piece of her.

I showed the video directed by Steven Klein behind the fragrance two weeks ago, which is very sensual.  Her fragrance is as well topped off with notes of honey, saffron and apricot nectar, followed by tiger orchid and jasmine.  It's labeled as a fruity floral, but one I'd wear at nighttime.  Overall it's innovative and impressive.

A Recent Love Affair with Barneys Beauty... I Feel Very SJP!

As Sarah Jessica Parker once told Vanity Fair, "If you're a nice person and you work hard, you get to go shopping at Barneys.  It's the decadent reward."  Well, Barneys came to me... A few weeks ago as my doorman handed me all of my packages I found myself floored by the size and weight of the Barneys bag I had to carry up to my apartment.  It was like Christmas morning and even though I only live three floors up, I took the elevator.  It took some time to go through it and try out all of the latest launches, but here are my absolute favorites.

Eve Lom Rescue Mask

I'm a face mask junkie and have about 12 in my vanity, all for different reasons of course, but this one does it all.  It's the miracle mask.  Seriously.  It's clay based and rejuvenates and refreshes tired skin, rids any imperfection from a pimple to a scab and really makes my skin look healthy and vibrant.  It's well worth the $50, but since the bottle is less than two ounces, I hoard this one and don't share.

Chantecaille Brilliant Gloss in Classic

Besides being one of Angelina Jolie's favorite glosses, it's also now my absolute favorite gloss.  Despite the fact that it's a whopping $32 for a lipgloss, I will purchase it when I run out.  People ask me if I had lip injections when I wear it, which is weird because while it does have wheat protein for plumping purposes, it doesn't feel like a lip plumper at all.  The smooth, stick free formula makes my mouth appear full with a classy shine, not goopy.

X-Ray Profumo in Delirium

It's extremely rare that I find a perfume that I love because to be honest most of them give me headaches, but this is a delicate, feminine blend with a sensual twist that I can't get enough of lately.  I also like that I'm the only one in my group of friends who wears it.  Well worth the $185 price tag.

Agent Provocateur Introduces Three New Alluring Fragrances

I'm obsessed with everything Agent Provocateur and while I can't afford the lingerie (seriously $130 for a thong!) I became obsessed with their first two fragrances, Eau de Parfum, Maitresse and L'Agent.  They first launched about six years ago when I was working in beauty at Cosmo and I remember snatching them.  They were a piece of the sexiest, luxury lingerie brand that I was able to obtain and could actually afford.  Now, the Agent Provocateur is coming out with three more daytime appropriate, provocative fragrances.

Agent Provocateur 'Eau Provocateur' - a brand new fragrance that blends citrus notes with red fruits.  Florals like Muguet and Orange Flower gloat over base notes of Myrrh, Vanilla and Tonka Bean.

Agent Provocateur L'Agent 'Eau Provocateur' - the daytime version of the original, L'Agent.  The floral scent was given a light twist of citrus notes like Leaf Accord, Mandarin and Apple and are grounded out by Musk, Patchouli and Sandalwood.

Agent Provocateur Maitresse 'Eau Provocateur' - the daytime version of the original, Maitresse.  Granny Smith Apple accord is topped with notes of Rose and Jasmine and grounded with Amber, Sandalwood and Tonka.

*Each fragrance will be available in April at department stores and online at AgentProvocateur.com for $70.

Exclusive Interview: Shakira Talks Beauty, Men & Guilty Pleasures

Ladies, I'm really excited because I had the pleasure to interview Colombian Songstress, Shakira!  She was kind enough to take some time out of her tour schedule to fill me in about her new fragrance, S by Shakira Eau Florale, which she says is, "a very simple fragrance with few accords and few notes, but which blended together manage to say a lot."  Check out the interview after the jump:

This is Shakira's second fragrance and is blended with floral notes of jasmine, bergamot and cassis layered over sweet fruits such as blackberry, raspberry and blueberry that finish with musk and vanilla.

Why did you decide to create a second fragrance?

After working on S by Shakira with the perfumer, I became interested in the possibilities of expressing emotions though scents.  I wanted to find a way of expressing the feeling of pure happiness through the medium of fragrance, and we achieved that with this floral fusion.

What does the idea of beauty mean to you?

Beauty comes from self confidence, being positive, feeling energy and loving and caring for oneself.

What do you think is the sexiest scent on a man and why?

The smell of a man right after he comes out of the shower, clean!

Do you think you'll ever launch more beauty products or even a fashion line?

I’m excited to be a part of this fascinating world and the more I get involved, the more I see the possibilities are endless.  We don’t have any immediate plans to bring out beauty products, but anything is possible.

What's your guiltiest pleasure?

Cheesy, romantic comedies.

Bond No. 9 Launches I Love NY Collection

Known for their fragrances inspired by the unique neighborhoods of New York, Bond No. 9 just launched an I Love New York collection.  To be honest, I'm surprised they didn't do this sooner! My first Bond No. 9 fragrance was their Nuits de Noho candle.  I'll never forget receiving it and coveting it for months as it sat displayed out on my book shelf after the candle burnt down just because it resembled NYC and I loved what it stood for – the upbeat edginess of downtown.

The I Love NY collection has a perfume, cologne and a unisex scent.  The perfume is blended with fruit and floral notes such as mandarin zest, spicy nutmeg and blueberry accord layered with roses, pink peonies, patchouli and grounded by musk, vanilla, sandalwood and leather accord.

If you like it when your man wears musky colognes, you may like this one. It contains notes such as patchouli, leather, sandalwood, musk and amber topped by ginger, juniper berry and lavender.

The unisex scent is my favorite (I'm not a fruity floral lover) as it's full of more grounded notes.  Bergamot, muguet and pepper are layered over cocoa, coffee beans and creamy chestnut.  Patchouli, vanilla, leatherwood and sandalwood finish it off.

*Available Sept. 18th

Betsey Johnson Launches Her Latest Fragrance, Too Too

Normally at 9 am I'm just beginning my day at the gym or taking my first sip of coffee, but this Tuesday was different.  I joined Betsey Johnson for brunch at Milk Studios as she launched her latest fragrance, Too Too.  With a "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" theme, Betsey was accompanied by ballerinas from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy and pink frosted cupcakes went hand in hand with champagne (yes, this was brunch).

Betsey, a former ballerina herself, arrived full of energy wearing a hot pink dress with black sneakers as I along with other editors and bloggers clung onto a cup of coffee.  The Stephen Petrinio Company performed a special dance for Betsey's 69th birthday celebration and two super cute DJ's spun in the center of the room.

The fragrance, Too Too, is very youthful in packaging and scent, which made the atmosphere of the event relevant.  It's very Betsey!  Loaded with sweet fruity notes of mandarin, ginger and strawberry layered over jasmine, bulgarian rose, patchouli, sandalwood and vanilla.  The fragrance retails for $42-$82 and also comes in a body lotion and roller ball form.

*Launching in October at Sephora.

The Art of Fragrance and Seduction

I'm super picky when it comes to scent.  Typically I don't like using scented products and love amber or vanilla fragranced candles or maybe a light spritz on my decolletage for nighttime.  However, with my profession, there will be some days where I smell like a concoction of scents for better or worse. When it comes to fragrance and seduction there are many different scents that are credited to turning men on, but according to research conducted by the Monell Chemical Senses Center the sexiest ones are those that bring out a woman's natural scent.  The gems – rose, musk, mint, green apple and oak moss.

Leave it to Victoria's Secret to create a scent that blended the top five sexiest notes.  Their Wild One Fragrance Mist is light and also combines raspberry and Lilly.

Vera Wang Preppy Princess Fragrance Giveaway

I have to admit, when I hear the word "preppy" two things come to mind, first my best friend Adrienne who has the chicest Upper East Side style with a downtown attitude and then I think "ew, not me". That's probably why we're still best friends after 20 years, because as different as we are we're very alike.  I'd far from Upper East Side style, but definitely have the downtown girl attitude!  So when I first received the press release for this new fragrance by Vera Wang I thought it would be something Adrienne would buy just for the name.

Vera Wang Preppy Princess, $75 is blended with tangerine, red apple and crushed berries layered with honeysuckle, jasmine, woods and a hint of coconut.  Talk about tantalizing your senses!  Delicious!

So whether you buy it for yourself or your BFF because of the name or the scent that's up to you, but I'm giving away a bottle to one lucky BeautySweetSpot reader!  Follow and RT @beautysweetspot on Twitter about the contest and comment below telling me about your preppiest BFF.

The winner will be announced on Friday, Jan. 21st.  Good luck!

Holiday Gift Idea & Giveaway: Calvin Klein Euphoria

Fragrance is a gifting staple – but not just any fragrance.  I know I'm super picky about what I wear and I'm sure the people on your list are too.  One fragrance that has stood the test of time is Calvin Klein Euphoria .  I've always appreciated the scent on men and women because it's classic. The Euphoria eau de parfum spray, $60 has top notes of pomegranate, persimmon, lush green; mid notes of lotus blossom, champaca flower, black orchid; and base notes: liquid amber, black violet, cream and mahogany making it seductively intoxicating.

Euphoria for men, $75 is spicy with top notes of ginger pepper, raindrop, sudachi; mid notes of black basil, cedar leaf, sage; and base notes: suede, patchouli, brazilian redwood and amber.

An AXE Giveaway That'll Turn You (and Him) On

Last week I was talking about flirting with Flirt! cosmetics and besides mascara being a flirting secret weapon (wink) I have to say a sexy scent is an ultimate flirting must have.  Better yet, forget flirting. One whiff of an intoxicating blend can create  a complete throw-me-down-on-the-kitchen-counter reaction.  Ladies, you know what I mean. As a matter of fact, according to a study done by AXE, two out of three women admitted they would be more likely to make out with a guy on a first date if his scent was right.  I'm asking what's wrong with the rest of them?  There's something so captivating about a good fragrance, but a difference between a good scent and an I-want-you scent.  If men were smart, they'd all use scent as their secret weapon. Hey, I do.

I will admit that I have one scent (out of about seven that I rotate between) that's my signature sexy scent. Ladies, it turns guys on.  Everyone asks what it is, but I won't tell them!  Like I said, it's a secret weapon.

I strongly advise you to find your secret weapon and but better yet, help your guy out too.  AXE not only has their signature body sprays (which are intoxicating) but also hair care that smells sexy too.  I'm giving away full sets of shampoos to four different BeautySweetSpot readers so you can hook your men up!

The full giveaway includes one of each of their new scents: Downpour Refreshing Mint Shampoo, Heat Igniting Citrus 2 in 1 Shampoo + Conditioner, Zen Soothing Tea Tree Shampoo. Each scent is perfect for different times of day and your mans different moods and needs.  Trust me, he'll thank you.

The sense of smell is so powerful it can alter and enhance your mood.  Scent alone can trigger emotion, bliss and memory.  Surround yourself this spring by fragrances that are instantly uplifting. Here are some of my top finds: Suave Naturals Mango Mandarin Refreshing Body Wash, $3.49 at drugstores

Start in the shower.  "When you wake up in the morning, your mind is at its most free to be emotionally transported by scent," remarked Dr. Rachel Hertz.

Degree Natureeffects Improves Your Mood

I have to admit, I'm normally not a huge fan of using fragranced deodorants, moisturizers or body washes. Even though there are so many on the market that smell almost edible or intoxicating, I like how I smell when I just get out of the shower and accessorize with a perfume that fits my mood. However, when I met Degree Natureeffects I gave scented deodorant a chance.

Formulated by fragrance expert, Ann Gottlieb, who's the nose behind Marc Jacobs Lola, Sarah Jessica Parker Covet, many of the Calvin Klein fragrances and AXE, Degree Natureeffects blends nature inspired scents in deodorants and body mists.

Out of the three blends, which include Honeysuckle & Tee Tree Oil, Olive Leaf & Pink Pepper and Orange Flower & Cranberry my favorite is the Honeysuckle & Tee Tree Oil. These scents aren't like other scented deodorants I've smelled before. They're actually very light and refreshing but what caught my attention is that you can smell them just enough to help relieve a little stress. (Warning: You may be caught sniffing your arm pits under pressure!)
