Achieve A Flawless Self Tan

I have to admit, whether pale or sun kissed complexions are in season, I always feel better with a nice glow and used to go to extremes to achieve a tan, yes, even in February. Before my days in the beauty industry, I would lay in a tanning bed daily and bake my skin so it was crisp and leather like. Now when I look at the crows feet that have already begun to appear around my eyes and think of the damage I've done to my skin, I shutter, but am proud to announce that I am now a reformed tanorexic.

Ever since I weaned off of my addiction I jumped onto a new one to satisfy my craving... spray tan. Although I was skeptical at first I find if you take the appropriate steps to prepare and care for your healthy spray tan, it's a win win situation all around.  Jamie Ahn, President of Townhouse Spa and Acqua Beauty Bar in NYC gave me the 411 on how to maximize your spray or self tan experience.

The key to a long lasting spray or self tan is smooth, even skin so exfoliation is a must.  Use an exfoliating cloth that can air dry or a gel based product on a mit. Product alone isn't enough for a deep exfoliation. Pay special attention to your ankles, knees, elbows and wrists.  If you're preparing for an event, get a manicure and pedicure prior to your tan.  It will help to keep things even.

After exfoliation, dry off and don't put your regular moisturizer on.  Professionals use gloves when applying tanner at the salon.  You can pick up a vinyl pair at your local drugstore.  For even distribution, start with a dollop the size of a quarter in your palm and apply to larger areas first.  Jamie suggests using Xen-Tan for a very natural color.  Keep applying product with measurement.  Do the tops of your thighs down to your ankles and the top of your shoulders down to your wrists.  This way you're left with little tanner at the end.  Squeeze just a dime size into your hand for your entire face and treat it the same way as your body.  For your hands and feet use a self tanner that has a spray applicator and lightly go over them at the end.

Make sure you wait at least six hours after a spray or self tan until you take a shower.  Jamie recommends doing it before bed, getting eight hours of sleep, and showering in the morning. To prolong your glowing results, use a moisturizer that acts as a tan extender daily.  They have DHA in them that helps make the tan last and keep it from fading unevenly.  Normally your tan will last three to five days but this can make it last over a week.

Thanks to Acqua Beauty Bar, I stay glowing all year round sans premature aging and the risk of skin cancer!

Tested and True Tuesday

Are you one of those people who ask your pedicurist to use the scraper despite the health hazards that go along with the end result of flake free feet?  I have to admit, so am I.  But, yesterday at the New York Makeup Show I discovered Blinc's Resurf.a.stic Callus, bought it and went to town.

It's made with large, diamond shaped crystals that exfoliate evenly and soften rough areas.  The crystals are real medical-grade microdermabrasion crystals.  Unlike a pumice stone, which normally leave my feet red and a little dry, this stick left my soles feeling smooth and not the least bit irritated because it's lubricated.

Looks like I hit the jackpot just in time for Memorial Day weekend, pedicure ready, sans the scraper!  Blinc Resurf.a.stic Callus and their other microderm products are available here.

Madonna Puts Best Face Forward

Walking out of my apartment this Saturday afternoon I had my most exciting celeb spotting yet, Madonna.  The superstar, looking tiny as can be all wrapped up in an oversided scarf, hopped out of a black Escalade accompanied by a bodygaurd and another woman (I wasn't able to identify) walked casually into a building full of doctor's offices, one of them being Dr. Fredric Brandt.

Dr. Brandt is a derm to many celebs, but famously known for working with Madonna.  There has been speculations of her keeping her wrinkle free forehead and cheekbones in tact with Botox through his talented hands.  Was she getting touched up this Saturday?

Free Blowouts This Wednesday

This Wednesday, May 20th, Kerastase is offering free in-salon treatments and blow drys.  I've gotten a Kerastase treatment before and the stylist used their Volumactive hair care line.  Ever since, I spoil myself once a week at home with their Care Volumactive, $58, which is a five minute conditioning treatment for hair that lacks volume.

Visit Kerastase.com to find a participating Kerastase Consultant Salon near you and make your appointment today.  Also, make sure you print out the invite to give to the salon when checking out.

Polish Change: Glossy vs. Matte

Choosing a mani and pedi color is an obstacle all on its own, but now besides color choices we're faced with yet another decision: a matte or glossy finish. Knockout Cosmetics came out with a line of polishes that dry completely matte.

Available in six shades: Black, Powder (white), Calamine (pink), Liberty (mint green), Karen (red), and their latest, OX (deep purple), they were created by film and stage makeup artist, Mike Porter.  They also have Flatte Top, which is a clear matte that can act as a base coat or top coat.  This is my favorite one because you can use it on top of your favorite nail polish shade and turn it matte to create the edgy, nontraditional look.

The lighter shades are harder to perfect on your own because they streak easily. Unless you're bringing them to your manicurist or have a lot of patience I wouldn't recommend them over the others.  Each polish is $22 and can be found at Henri Bendel.

Bobbi Brown's Top Secrets Revealed

Believe it or not Bobbi Brown began her makeup line with only ten shades of lipstick in 1991 that were sold exclusively in Bergdorf Goodman.  Now, its hard to walk through a department store without the urge to stop at her counter to check out the latest Shimmer Brick or seasoned palettes.

Being a makeup artist in high demand (especially during New York fashion week), Bobbi still finds ways to make herself accessible to the general public. She just released "Makeup Manual," which is a guide on how to apply your makeup in ten minutes or less.

"I wanted this book to serve as a complete reference guide for everyone who wants to know about beauty and makeup. It's filled with complete step-by-step lessons, industry tips and beautiful pictures," comments Bobbi.

I'm a big fan of anything I can do in under ten minutes to speed up my beauty routine in the morning.  It's an easy to read, practical makeup map for the non-makeup artist.

Bobbi also has quick makeup tutorials on You Tube that are very educational. Check out one of her latest on choosing the right cheek and lip color for your skin tone.  Hint: To find the perfect lipstick that works with your lip color match the shade to the color of your inner lip.

Bobbi Brown's "Makeup Manual" can be purchased here for $32.

L'Oreal Signs New Spokesmodels

Slumdog Millionaire actress, Freida Pinto and Lost co-star, Evangeline Lilly have joined the L'Oreal family as the latest faces of the brand.  These leading ladies are joining a celeb roster that includes Beyonce, Eva Longoria, Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz.

“I am very moved to be joining the great L’Oreal Paris family and all these personalities: a family I am now proud to be a part of,” Freida says in a statement.

Blake Lively Steals the Spotlight

Last week at the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute "Model As Muse" Gala models and stars such Eva Mendes, Heidi Klum, Jessica Stam, Gisele, Renee Zellweger, Jessica Alba and Jessica Biel all gathered to celebrate.

The red carpet was also flooded with the finest in the fashion industry including Anna Wintour, Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs, and Oscar de la Renta. However, even though there was an overwhelming amount of talent and beauty at the Met, one starlet shined brighter than the rest, Blake Lively.

We're all used to seeing her "Serena" side from Gossip Girl, which normally consists of touseled hair and school girl makeup.  Here, she portrays an overall sexy chic look that compliments her figure flattering Versace gown. The key to her look is her sleek ponytail and eye makeup.

"To make the eyes appear darker and more mysterious, black eyeliner was used on the top and bottom lash lines and on the inner bottom rims," states celebrity makeup artist, Katherine James-Gibson.

To duplicate it, after lining your lids, curl your lashes and apply two coats of black mascara to the top and bottom. Then, fill your brows in with a color that's about one or two shades lighter than your hair color.  A strong brow is essential.  If you're preparing for a special occasion, you can also apply individual false black lashes to the outer top lash line.  It will give you added flare in a natural way.

Which look do you prefer for Blake: school girl or sexy chic?

Tested and True Tuesday

I received Korres Pomegranate Cleansing and Make Up Removing Wipes in my gift bag from the CEW Beauty Awards Luncheon last week and and after using them all weekend I had to share my thoughts.

Unlike most cleansing wipes I've tried in the past these actually get rid of my make up (yes, even my mascara) and cleanse. I like using them after the gym to freshen up before I head home. Besides pomegranate extract, which is an antioxidant, they contain glycerin and Vitamin E for moisturization. They're great for the girl on the go.

One pack contains 25 wipes, $12, available at Sephora.

Shopping on HauteLook.com is like going to a sample sale minus all the madness. They offer 36 to 72 hour designer sales and membership is free. I've fought vigorously for a pair of Manolos before and got beat out, but have bought a few great dresses for much less than what they would go for in Bergdorfs. Tip: get on the site as soon as the sale starts to ensure you get everything you want! Happy shopping!

Highlight Your Best Assets

A few years ago in Sin City I introduced my best girl friends to the secret behind the accenting glow that complimented my wardrobe each night.  Liquid highlighter.  It's one of my must-have finishing touches when hitting the scene.  My girls have been addicted ever since making it one of their secret beauty weapons.

There are all different types to choose from, depending on where you want to use it and what look you would like to achieve.  If you're looking for a subtle glow on your face, I recommend Benefit Moon Beam,$24, at Sephora.  Dab a few drops underneath your eyebrow and on your cheek bones then blend.  The golden undertones will enhance your complexion and give you a radiant boost.

DEX New York Mineral Glow, $34, is a great pick for the face and body.  This reflective veil is made with a blend of antioxidants to protect your skin and is also loaded with minerals. The packaging is so clever.  The top comes off to reveal a spatula built in so you don't need to use your fingers to apply.  Accent your face, decolletage, shoulders and shins.  When the light catches these areas, all eyes will focus on your best assets.  Available in two shades at www.dexnewyork.com.

Illusions of Idealism

Have you ever met someone who seemed too good to be true?  The conversations were engaging, he was beyond gorgeous... model type to be exact, he understood how to dress, was well groomed, had a successful career, got along with all of your friends and every time you were with him you felt like you were on top of the world.  Until you woke up and realized everything wrong with the equation... he was your idea of perfection.  Everything looked good on paper, but in all reality, he wasn't "it."  We're faced with situations like this every single day in the fabulous world of beauty and fashion.

If you open an issue of your favorite fashion magazine or your man's favorite mag, Maxim, splashed across each page are illusions, people's ideas of perfection. Airbrushed models who spent hours upon hours in hair and makeup after spray tans preparing for their shoots.  And then there are the celebrities, who have their own personal trainers, nutritionists, hair stylists and makeup artists who primp and prep them as part of their daily routine.  Pictured above, Jessica Alba before and after airbrushing for the Campari calendar photo shoot. Her hips and waist are slimmer in the after and her breasts are boosted to perfection. How can we possibly keep up?

Americans have become obsessed with this idea of perfection, however we know that achieving what we see in print and on TV is nearly impossible.  Everything looks better on paper.  It's important we keep our "blinders" off in this world of illusions in order to appreciate true beauty and pay attention to our real needs, wants and desires.

The Long Bob

Heidi Klum has recently been made the "Ambassador of Style" for LG's latest campaign and they couldn't have chosen a better fashionista.  Amongst many starletts sporting the long bob this spring, she has been pulling it off flawlessly.  It's a great cut for any face shape, but the key to pulling it off is to keep it blunt, right above shoulder length with absolutely no layers.

CEW Beauty Awards Announce

Waking up this morning was like waking up on Christmas day for a ten-year-old.  The CEW Beauty Awards Luncheon finally arrived.  For those of you who don't know, this event is like the Academy Awards for the beauty industry.  Everybody who's anybody fills up the ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria in NYC with the same hopes... to go home with an award.

I sat with Dr. Audrey Kunin of DERMAdoctor, who runs the world's largest skincare advice column on the internet at www.dermadoctor.com.  Her new Ain't Misbehavin' Skin Clarifying and Mattifying SPF 30 was a finalist in the sun care category.
